Mad Mack: Three Terrible Things About Gaming In 2012

Posted by Mark Butler on Monday, December 17, 2012 ? 4 Comments?

There have been some truly great goings-on in video games this year ? but there have also been plenty of loathsome trends and developments too. Armed with his usual blend of dark humour and very strong language, disgruntled gamer Dave ?Mack? McConkey takes furious aim at the things that have riled him the most.

So here we are. The end of yet another year. And what a year it has been, full of wonder and innovation, with gaming seemingly?going from strength to strength. Games have been released that are the kinds of experiences you?could only?fantasise about?as a kid playing Duck Hunt. Whole worlds, lovingly and beautifully rendered, are now yours to explore and inhabit. The image of the solo gamer locked away with little human contact has been driven further into obscurity, and is now replaced by acceptance of gaming as a social activity ? with the WiiVerse being the most recent development in social gaming.

There have been many highlights throughout the year. For one, XCOM?s success showed that you can take a beloved, older game, and update it to suit the tastes of the modern gamer without losing the appeal or core feel of the original.

Did you hear that EA? DID YOU?!

DayZ, my personal Game of the Year (and yes it IS a fucking game in its own right ? pulling me up for it being a mod for Arma 2 and therefore not eligible for GOTY status is like calling chess a variation of draughts because they are played on the same board), allowed you to recapture that simple childhood joy of going to the beach and meticulously building a sand fort over the course of several hours, only for some script-running cunt in a 4?4 to come flying in, kick over the sand fort, slap you about the face with his cock, and then ride off into the sunset to wreck someone else?s fun anew. That standalone had best get a wiggle on.

Mass Effect 3 was a pretty good finale to the trilogy (the actual shitty ending notwithstanding); indie gaming continued to impress, buoyed in some considerable part by kickstarter kicking off (see what I did there?); and Spec Ops: The Line decided that instead of being a really generic ?realistic? shooter, it was going to be fucking brilliant.

But of course, this year has not been all good times and cheer. In fact, rather than being representative of gaming as a whole in 2012, the examples I mentioned above are more like shiny diamonds glittering in the fetid waters of mediocrity, repetitiveness and exploitation.

And this. Never forget.

?Oh come on,? I hear you cry. ?It isn?t that bad. Stop your whining and enjoy the veritable cornucopia of delights that are laid before your feet.? To which I reply ?Oh really? Well then, how do you explain???

?

All the DLC

I have banged the drum on this topic more than once, but I am going to keep banging it until someone out there listens, and publishers stop looking at gamers like we are fatted calves they can mine for endless money a piece at a time (don?t look too much into that analogy, just go with it).

Like this...maybe?

First, a confession. My name is David McConkey, and I bought the Battlefield 3 Premium Pass. At the time I did not realise that I would stop playing BF3 about a week after I bought the damn thing, and I figured that I had given about 200 hours to BF3 so it was not a full waste of money. But it was. It really, really was.

The whole problem with these season passes is that you are putting money into the hands of publishers for content that does not even exist yet. Where is the incentive for EA to release top quality maps in the add-on packs when 90% of the total DLC revenue will be generated in the first month of the premium passes going on sale? There isn?t one. Not really. So you end up being shilled into paying for content before anyone has even tried it out. AND let?s not forget that a few months after the last BF3 DLC is released, BF4 is due to hit the shops. Let me ask you something ? do you think it is in EA?s best interest to save all the really good maps and content they have developed and put it in the new game, or give it all to a dwindling player base and force them to develop more top quality content for the new game?

"And then I said: 'Of course we care about our fans!'"

Yeah, thought so.

For large online multiplayer games, DLC passes can work. Just because I didn?t get value out of it does not mean that someone won?t. However, it is the spread of these passes that is the scariest thing. I know that Modern Warfare 3 really kicked things off in 2011 with their Elite packs, but they are just going to become more and more common. Darksiders 2 had something similar, and I?m pretty sure the only reason Microsoft didn?t include something like it for Halo 4 is because they are piling all their vast resources into making sure players get on board with the new trilogy and developer team. It gives Halo an edge over the competition, but if they don?t start edging in subscription gaming to their next Halo games, then I will eat a dick.

Preferably spotted...

Other game franchises, some that are completely unsuited for this sort of approach, are beginning to adopt the ?Season Pass? model for maximising the monetisation of each gamer during the early, heady post-launch days when the game is getting the most play. This is a trend that I can only see continuing into the future, until you will become used to paying for a game in the shop and then paying the same again just to access the game content. And we can all look back to 2012 as the year it all began. This, ladies and gentlemen, is our Phantom Menace, and season passes are our Jar Jar Binks. Yeah, think about that.

?

Franchises. Fucking Franchises

When you think of Valve and Blizzard, what do they have in common? Huge fan bases? Vast sums of money?? Top quality games and IPs? Sometimes ridiculous game development cycles? All of the above? I am going to make an argument here ? they are the royal family of 21st Century gaming, and Gabe Newell is the King.

Hail to the King, baby...

And the reason they are the Royal Family is because it seems like they can?t take a dump without spraying our faces with genre defining and rule-breaking flecks of genius. Every game they release is just great. It builds on the last but changes it. They do not rest on their laurels, but rather they see the works they have created and they say ?wow, that was good, and people like it, but technology is always improving, so let?s make sure that we improve our games with it.

Now let?s try something else. When you think of Treyarch, Ubisoft and Nintendo, what do you think of? For me, I think ?palette swap?.

Like so. Only with less iconic character creation.

First, Treyarch. They released COD: Black Ops 2 this year, and, at the time of writing, it is sitting comfortably in the top chart position, where it has remained since launch. It has broken the sales records set by its predecessors and has generated a mountain of cash for Treyarch and Activision. And I just cannot figure out why. To me it seems that the COD games since the launch of MW2 are little more than variations of the same theme, and in a just universe would be considered little more than add-on packs or palette swaps of each other.? But no, this isn?t a just universe, is it? So somehow, every year Activision get to release the same game and every year it breaks previous records. You know what COD has turned into? FIFA. Or Madden if you are an American. That is where we are at. Release the same game every year and watch the monies pile up.

While we are on that topic, can someone please explain to me how Ubisoft have managed to release a completely new Assassin?s Creed game every year since 2009? Please? I want to know. I personally thought the first game was dog-shit awful, but the follow up in 2009 improved on every single aspect of the original in all the ways a true sequel should. Then, I take my eyes off the ball for a second and suddenly we are on Assassin?s Creed 3, but between 2 and 3 there have been a couple of other full games, and five (yes, FIVE!!!) mobile titles. I am sure the games I missed are good, but do I now have 60 hours to dedicate to get from where I am at the end of ACII to the end of ACIII via Brotherhood and Revelations (that is assuming a generous 20 hours per game, which is probably barely enough to get through the campaigns, let alone all the crypts and relics and other McGuffins)? It just seems to me that they have churned out a huge quivering, sticky pile of games without really advancing the gameplay any.

Also, they claim Altair was some great assassin. But he was just really boring and water soluble.

I don?t really know anymore. How is it that games publishers can release the same game every year and people still go fucking crazy for it? Are attention spans really that short? Come on publishers. Look at what Valve and Blizzard are doing and take a leaf out of their book. You are at the point where you are just churning out unoriginal and uninspiring content at a fantastic rate. Take a step back and try to reach for better things, not just appeal to whatever base denominator you have found to be a cash cow. And gamers, I really cannot stress this enough. Stop. Fucking. Buying. Them.

Oh, and since we are talking about gamers?.

?

The PC Gaming Community (or, more specifically, PC Gamers)*

This year I joined the ranks of PC gamers by sorting myself out with a half decent rig that should see me happily gaming on the highest settings for at least, ooo I dunno, a month?? Two maybe? Things move awful fast in the world of PC gaming so it is really hard to call. Whatever, it means that for the first time I have this whole other world opened to me. I set up, wide eyed and excited, looking forward to joining in with my fellow PC gamers as we explored hitherto undreamt of frontiers that lie far beyond the earthly designs of mere console players. Truly for me, this was the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius. Until, that is, I actually interacted with some PC gamers.

It was on the internet, so I probably should have known better...

I am not going to pull my punches here. PC gamers seem to think that because they can afford to pay for (or more likely, their parents can pay for) either a gaming rig, or the components to a gaming rig (neither being cheap options) and are able to use Steam to run their games for them, then their shit doesn?t stink. They have this idea that playing games on a PC makes them better than the (quote) ?retard console fags? that make up the majority of the gaming public. There is this idea of superiority over others that stems entirely from the fact that playing games on a PC is marginally more complicated and difficult than playing them on a console. Well, I have a bit of news for you chief: playing PC games doesn?t make you fucking Rainman. It just means that you have to spend a little bit more time setting up and then running the game, and as a reward you have better graphics and can play larger games. That. Is. All.

Not you. And not PC gaming.

I could not believe the levels of abuse that PC gamers seemed to want to heap onto anyone who would dare question the superiority and majesty of PC gaming. And heaven forbid that you dare suggest that consoles have some advantages over PCs, especially in the area of convenience and ease of use. You will be told to fuck off back to your Xbox like the little bitch you are, because you are obviously too fucking retarded to understand how PC gaming works. No, you will not get a well-reasoned ?I see what you mean, but on balance PC gaming has got to be the preferred format?, nor will anyone even offer a sound rebuttal to your argument. No, you will simply get abuse for daring to suggest that PCs are anything less than Holy.

PC Gamers, or at least a significant vocal percentage, are arrogant, self-absorbed, elitist thunder-cunts that absolutely love to smell their own smug farts. Or, to put it another way, they are even worse than the most insufferable Xbox Live COD-playing, rage-quitting, racist teenager. They are worse because they should know better.

When I joined the ranks of PC gamers, I expected a fraternity. What I have seen since is as bad as any other gaming community, only worse, because PC gamers are ? in general ? held in higher esteem than most others. They scoff at how pathetic and immature XBL rage gamers are, and they pretend that such behaviour is far beneath them; but in reality this pretense of maturity is actually just a thick, glutinous layer of arrogance and bigotry.

PC Gamers. Be better. Be better than the worst console gamers. Remind me that there is good in the world. Restore my faith that there are people out there who have not lost sight of what is most important. PC games are just so fucking cheap on Steam and the graphics are wonderful and I can go from viewing a whole battlefield and zoom in close enough to see individual blades of grass and there are SO many strategy games and?and they are just so fucking awesome! PCs are fucking great. You should be too. Otherwise you sound worse than this:

So there we are. This is how I will remember gaming in 2012. I will remember some good, but I will remember infinitely more bad. And so, as we come to the close of yet another depressing year in gaming, I leave you with my one, final thought: the world is one year closer to its?inevitable end?-?and that makes me glad.

?

Chinese think tank urges end to one-child policy

BEIJING (AP) ? A Chinese government think tank is urging the country's leaders to start phasing out its one-child policy immediately and allow two children for every family by 2015, a daring proposal to do away with the unpopular policy.

Some demographers see the timeline put forward by the China Development Research Foundation as a bold move by the body close to the central leadership. Others warn that the gradual approach, if implemented, would still be insufficient to help correct the problems that China's strict birth limits have created.

Xie Meng, a press affairs official with the foundation, said the final version of the report wil be released "in a week or two." But Chinese state media have been given advance copies. The official Xinhua News Agency said the foundation recommends a two-child policy in some provinces from this year and a nationwide two-child policy by 2015. It proposes all birth limits be dropped by 2020, Xinhua reported.

"China has paid a huge political and social cost for the policy, as it has resulted in social conflict, high administrative costs and led indirectly to a long-term gender imbalance at birth," Xinhua said, citing the report.

But it remains unclear whether Chinese leaders are ready to take up the recommendations. China's National Population and Family Planning Commission had no immediate comment on the report Wednesday.

Known to many as the one-child policy, China's actual rules are more complicated. The government limits most urban couples to one child, and allows two children for rural families if their first-born is a girl. There are numerous other exceptions as well, including looser rules for minority families and a two-child limit for parents who are themselves both singletons.

Cai Yong, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, said the report holds extra weight because the think tank is under the State Council, China's Cabinet. He said he found it remarkable that state-backed demographers were willing to publicly propose such a detailed schedule and plan on how to get rid of China's birth limits.

"That tells us at least that policy change is inevitable, it's coming," said Cai, who was not involved in the drafting of the report but knows many of the experts who were. Cai is currently a visiting scholar at Fudan University in Shanghai. "It's coming, but we cannot predict when exactly it will come."

Adding to the uncertainty is a once-in-a-decade leadership transition that kicks off Nov. 8 that will see a new slate of top leaders installed by next spring. Cai said the transition could keep population reform on the back burner or changes might be rushed through to help burnish the reputations of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao on their way out.

There has been growing speculation among Chinese media, experts and ordinary people about whether the government will soon relax the one-child policy ? introduced in 1980 as a temporary measure to curb surging population growth ? and allow more people to have two children.

Though the government credits the policy with preventing hundreds of millions of births and helping lift countless families out of poverty, it is reviled by many ordinary people. The strict limits have led to forced abortions and sterilizations, even though such measures are illegal. Couples who flout the rules face hefty fines, seizure of their property and loss of their jobs.

Many demographers argue that the policy has worsened the country's aging crisis by limiting the size of the young labor pool that must support the large baby boom generation as it retires. They say it has contributed to the imbalanced sex ratio by encouraging families to abort baby girls, preferring to try for a male heir.

The government recognizes those problems and has tried to address them by boosting social services for the elderly. It has also banned sex-selective abortion and rewarded rural families whose only child is a girl.

Many today also see the birth limits as outdated, a relic of the era when housing, jobs and food were provided by the state.

"It has been thirty years since our planned economy was liberalized," commented Wang Yi, the owner of a shop that sells textiles online, under a news report on the foundation's proposal. "So why do we still have to plan our population?"

Though open debate about the policy has flourished in state media and on the Internet, leaders have so far expressed a desire to maintain the status quo. President Hu said last year that China would keep its strict family planning policy to keep the birth rate low and other officials have said that no changes are expected until at least 2015.

Wang Feng, director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy and an expert on China's demographics, contributed research material to the foundation's report but has yet to see the full text. He said he welcomed the gist of the document that he's seen in state media.

It says the government "should return the rights of reproduction to the people," he said. "That's very bold."

Gu Baochang, a professor of demography at Beijing's Renmin University and a vocal advocate of reform, said the proposed timeline wasn't aggressive enough.

"They should have reformed this policy ages ago," he said. "It just keeps getting held up, delayed."

FEMA: Flood Insurance may be Lacking | Daily Business News

> News Item, Trends > FEMA: Flood Insurance may be Lacking

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the Federal Emergency Management Fund (FEMA) has enough funding for disaster relief, but it may come up short for the federal flood insurance program, MHProNews has learned from CNNMoney. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) paid out $1.8 billion following Hurricane Irene last year, but the tab this year is expected to run in the multi-billions, although it is too early to know the actual figure. FEMA still owes $18 billion to the Treasury Department for Hurricane Katrina, and while it has access to $3.8 billion, Congress may have to add funding to the program. Private insurers do not sell flood insurance. People in the Northeast are less likely to buy flood insurance than those living in the hurricane-prone South. However, since Hurricane Irene hit last year, 14 percent of homeowners living in the Northeast bought federal flood insurance, an increase from five percent in 2011.

Jailed punk band got what they deserved: Putin

NOVO OGARYOVO, Russia (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin flatly rejected on Thursday Western criticism of the imprisonment of the Pussy Riot punk protest band, saying its three female members deserved their fate because they threatened the moral foundations of Russia.

During a two-hour dinner conversation with a group of foreign Russia experts, Putin spent most of his time carefully explaining how his country was trying to improve the business climate and diversify the economy away from its heavy dependence on oil and gas by promoting high-tech industries.

The Kremlin chief said he had "mixed feelings" about a $55 billion state-sponsored takeover of the country's number three private oil producer TNK-BP last week because it increased state-controlled Rosneft's domination of the energy sector.

But Putin said he acted to help BP and put an end to "fistfights" between the British oil major and its four Soviet-born oligarch partners. "We tried not to get involved, but when BP managers came to me and the government and said we want to cooperate with Rosneft, we could not say no," said Putin. Rosneft is run by a longtime close Putin ally, Igor Sechin, and the deal will give BP a stake of nearly 20 percent.

Putin said he was implementing new laws and reforming the courts to reach a target of moving Russia up from its 112th place in the annual World Bank rankings for ease of doing business - below Pakistan - to a top 20 place by 2018.

PUSSY RIOT

But the president, now in his 13th year running Russia, became animated only when asked about Pussy Riot during the seven-course meal with the Valdai Club of foreign journalists and academics at his Stalin-era residence in a wooded compound outside Moscow.

The Valdai members were kept waiting in a separate room for an hour and a half for the meeting, while Putin met a group of factory workers and teachers from the Volga region to discuss religious cults.

Two young women from Pussy Riot received two-year prison sentences for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" after performing a crude anti-Putin protest song in Moscow's main cathedral. A third band member was released on a suspended sentence.

At Thursday's dinner Putin raised his voice, looked straight at the questioner and asked why Westerners who criticized Russia for sending two of the young women to labor camps far from Moscow had not come out in support of a jailed American who made an anti-Muslim hate film.

"Do you want to support people with such views? If you do, then why do you not support the guy who is sitting in prison for the film about the Muslims?" the president shot back.

This was an apparent reference to "The Innocence of Muslims", a crude hate video that triggered violent protests across the Islamic world when it was aired on the Internet.

An actress in the film has identified an Egyptian-born Californian, Mark Basseley Youssef, as its author. Youssef is currently detained on suspicion of violating his probation terms for a bank fraud conviction.

"We have red lines beyond which starts the destruction of the moral foundations of our society," Putin went on. "If people cross this line they should be made responsible in line with the law." He described Pussy Riot's protest as "an act of group sex aimed at hurting religious feelings".

CLAMPDOWN ON DISSENT

Putin's comments came amid a wider clampdown on dissent in Russia, which has included arrests of opposition leaders on criminal charges and tighter controls on media.

This has led to fears that the political system, which is highly centralized under the Kremlin, is becoming increasingly ossified and intolerant.

Putin deflected a question about the possible stagnation of the system by saying Russia was re-introducing direct elections for state governors, making it easier for political parties to register and allowing citizens to petition the state Duma (parliament) directly with proposals.

Many of the same faces who worked with Putin when he was deputy mayor of St Petersburg in the early 1990s are still in senior positions in Moscow in the government and in state companies.

But Putin said around two-thirds of the members of the government had been changed when he returned to the Kremlin earlier this year, swapping places with his prot?g? Dmitry Medvedev, who is now prime minister.

"I prefer to choose qualified, experienced people who have proved they can do well," the president explained. He rejected suggestions that there were any disputes inside the government in the wake of the departure just over a year ago of long-time Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin.

TRADE GOALS

Putin insisted that Russia would continue to give a high priority to growing its trade with its top business partner China, aiming to boost bilateral business to $100 billion a year from current levels of $83.5 billion.

Beijing and Moscow were also keen to do as much trade as possible in their national currencies, he said, noting that the rouble was fully convertible and that it was a "matter of time" until the yuan was, too.

By contrast, he berated the European Union for its "ridiculous" slowness in agreeing a visa-free regime for Russia and attacked Brussels for not taking him up on an offer of cooperation on a new satellite navigation system between the European Galileo system and Russia's GLONASS project.

"The EU has a visa-free regime with certain Latin American countries, and I don't think their crime levels are any less than ours," he said. "I don't understand this approach."

Putin also had a ready answer for a questioner who enquired how he would stop an exodus of talented, qualified young people to the West. It was entirely normal, he said, for young people to study and work in other countries where there was more money or a good education on offer.

And what would the president want historians to highlight as the greatest achievement of his third term in the Kremlin?

"You know, I am never guided by a possible assessment of my work," Putin said, before highlighting how the economy had doubled in size under his stewardship, average incomes had soared, gold reserves were the world's fourth biggest, the birth rate had increased - all what he termed "modest, positive changes ... but not enough".

"We need to create a democratic, effective system of governance so that people feel they are participating," he said. "We need to create an effective economy which is looking forward and to guarantee the country's security. I am sure we are capable of solving all these problems."

Earnings roundup: St Jude Medical, Amphenol

Among the earnings stories for Wednesday, Oct. 17, from The Associated Press:

? Medical device maker St. Jude Medical Inc. reported third-quarter earnings that beat expectations, though company shares slumped as the executives warned that the company could receive a regulatory warning over a California manufacturing plant.

? Amphenol, which makes fiber optic cables, said its third-quarter net income climbed 10 percent, driven by strength across a variety of markets.

? Television and digital media company Media General Inc. said its third-quarter net loss widened because of higher expenses, but revenue grew sharply thanks to an increase in political advertising and the Olympics.

? Dover Corp.'s third-quarter net income rose 40 percent, helped by acquisitions and by the absence of a big loss tied to discontinued operations from a year ago. But CEO Robert Livingston said the company faces challenges in the handset and electronics markets, along with uncertainty in the global economy, and the manufacturer cut its forecast for the year.

Housing starts surge to fastest pace since 2008

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Groundbreaking on new U.S. homes surged in September to its fastest pace in more than four years, a sign the housing sector's budding recovery is gaining traction.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday housing starts increased 15 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 872,000 units. That was the quickest pace since July 2008, though data on housing starts is volatile and subject to substantial revisions.

Augusts' starts were revised to show a 758,000-unit pace instead of the previously reported 750,000.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast residential construction rising to a 770,000-unit rate.

The housing starts rate is now about 40 percent of its peak in January 2006. The housing market, the Achilles heel of the recovery from the 2007-09 recession, is slowly healing.

September groundbreaking for single-family homes, the largest segment of the market, rose 11 percent to a 603,000-unit pace - the highest level since August 2008. Starts for multi-family homes climbed 25.1 percent.

Building permits grew by 11.6 percent to a 894,000-unit pace in September. August's permits were unrevised at 801,000 units.

Economists had expected permits to rise to a 810,000-unit pace last month.

Long history of fan trouble in Serbia

By DUSAN STOJANOVIC

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:21 a.m. ET Oct. 17, 2012

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) - The racial abuse that black English players suffered during a soccer match in Serbia wasn't the first time such problems have occurred at the hands of Serbian fans. On Tuesday, the under-21 England players suffered abuse in Krusevac, Serbia, including monkey chants and objects thrown onto the field. The British government is now urging UEFA to impose "tough sanctions" against Serbia, and the decision could be influenced by similar problems in the past.

POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES

UEFA President Michel Platini had warned Serbia in February 2011 of possible expulsion of its clubs and the national team from international competitions, if its notorious fans continued to cause trouble. Platini personally issued the warning during a meeting with Serbia's former President Boris Tadic in Belgrade. In 2007, the Serbian Football Association was fined a small amount - >16,000 - after supporters racially abused England players at the under-21 Euros in Holland.

SERBIAN FANS

The nation's soccer fans are notorious for causing trouble at home and abroad. UEFA awarded Italy a 3-0 win over Serbia after a European Championship qualifier in Genoa, Italy, in 2010 was stopped when Serbia supporters threw flares and fireworks onto the field, burned a flag and broke barriers. Police then clashed with Serbian fans outside the stadium. A Belgrade court last year convicted 14 Serbian fans and sent them to prison for the fatal beating of a French soccer fan in the capital before Partizan Belgrade's Europa League soccer match against Toulouse, France, in September 2009.

FAR-RIGHT GROUPS

Soccer fan organizations in Serbia have been infiltrated by extreme right-wing groups who propagate anti-Western xenophobia and intolerance toward foreigners, blacks, ethnic groups and minorities, including gays. The notoriety of the fans dates back to the wars in the Balkans when they were recruited to fight rival Bosnian Muslims and Catholic Croats as paramilitary forces, including the late warlord Zeljko Raznatovic's "Arkan's Tigers." Groups of soccer fans also have allegedly been involved in drug trafficking and other illegal trade.

SERBIA'S GOVERNMENT

Despite repeated pledges to crack down on violent soccer fan groups, Serbia's authorities have done little to prevent such problems. Instead, they have repeatedly bowed to threats from such groups, including when police cancel gay pride marches after extremists threaten to attack them.

SOCCER IN THE BALKANS

Serbia's fans are not the only troublemakers in the Balkan region. Platini has also warned Croatia of severe punishment if its right-wing extremist fans continue racial abuses against black players and chanting pro-Nazi songs that usually target rival Serbs. Despite repeated incidents since the warning last year, UEFA has only imposed financial punishments of the Croatian Football Association.

Some property owners remain confused when choosing a home improvement project to get that gives the most beneficial return on their investment due to the wide array of choices for home improvement.

Installing double glazed windows, adding a conservatory, an extension, a loft area and a attic are some of the common choices to transform and develop a house. Property owners these days are prioritizing homes with double glazed windows on them. Having new double glazed windows will not only only provide a better insulated home, but additionally an improved valued home.

Double Glazed Windows

So just what are double glazing windows? Some people are still clueless of what they are as well as the many benefits they present even though they are already popular. To begin with, these are generally windows but instead of just one glass pane, it has two panes. To enhance the window?s insulating characteristics, between each glass pane is an inert gas like argon. For a strong long-lasting window, its framework is generally crafted from uPVC. Even so, they can also be made out of aluminium or wood.

Yet another excellent thing about double glazing is that they never rot and do not fade its colours thanks to uPVC. Moreover, they seldom need maintenance. A beautiful window all the time is now achievable. Housebuyers just light up with enthusiasm when real estate professionals tell this bit of information with regards to the windows in the home they're about to buy.

Windows Increase Home Value

Many real estate brokers know that windows of homes can affect its value. So if you want to increase the investment options you could try to increase the price of your home, double glazed windows should not be forgotten.

Your savings by the end of the month will significantly increase because double glazed windows are effective at trapping warmth. A lot of possible housebuyers would like the thought of saving with their power bills. However, if you reside in a listed region, secondary glazing could be an option.

If you wish to keep your home in the very best shape possible, whether you intend on remaining there for years or reselling it in the near future, getting your old windows changed with double glazing is one area that will always keep a beneficial effect on the value of your house. Marcelo breaks right foot in Brazil practice

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:57 p.m. ET Oct. 14, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) - Real Madrid left back Marcelo has broken his right foot in training with Brazil and will be sidelined until at least the end of the year.

Brazil doctor Rodrigo Lasmar says the defender will be out for at least three months after getting hurt Sunday in Poland, where the team will play Japan in an exhibition Tuesday.

Lasmar says Marcelo's injury may require surgery. The player will return to Spain on Monday to be evaluated by Real Madrid doctors.

Marcelo says he will "be back soon" and that he wants to fully recover in time for the 2013 Confederations Cup that Brazil will host.

Marcelo has been Brazil's starter at left back under coach Mano Menezes, who will not replace him on the squad before Tuesday's match.

Images from the banned Apple/Foxconn game

A controversial game was live in the Apple app store for less than an hour this weekend before being taken down by Apple. The visually-striking game imagines the afterlife of seven Foxconn workers who committed suicide. We happened to buy the game in the short window it was available, so included screen grabs below.

This blog is not intended as a statement about Apple, Foxconn, or the creator of the game. As digital marketers, part of our role is to keep abreast of what's trending in consumer and tech conversations. This blog is intended to share with you information about, and screengrabs from, a game that is in the limelight.

In the game titled "In a Permanent Save State," players take each of seven characters on a short journey through an artistically-drawn, ghostly area. Each level begins with a short story about the person, including information like how many hours of overtime they worked (e.g. "3x the legal limit") and aspects of Buddhist afterlife tradition. The art in the game is haunting and often beautiful. In one level, the player begins by taking the character down a path, which turns out to be actually be a giant arm holding an iPhone.

Game creator Benjamin Poynter said in an email to the online publication "The Verge" that his motivation was empathy, not anger. "I related quite a bit to the situation of these young people and the stress that comes with not seeing the end of things...I guessed in my mind what they would have wanted to see in their eternal setting, as I had visions of it myself."

"In a Permanent Save State" isn't the first iPhone-production-related app to be taken down by Apple. Paolo Pedercini's "Phone Story," is a parody game that took players through levels about ethical concerns connected to the production of the iPhone including mining of rare earth minerals and abandoned components. The game was removed from the store for being "objectionable."

The following are screengrabs from the game "In a Permanent Save State." (Click each image for more detail.)

Breaking down the AP college football poll after Week 7 of the regular season.

___

MAKING A STATEMENT

Don't get comfortable, Florida. Same goes for you, Kansas State. Notre Dame, too.

For the second straight week, multiple top-five teams in The Associated Press football poll lost and the rankings got a shake-up behind No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon.

South Carolina and West Virginia were the big losers this week, and the Gators, Wildcats and Fighting Irish were the beneficiaries.

Florida moved up a spot to No. 3 on Sunday after beating Vanderbilt 31-17. No. 4 Kansas State (which defeated Iowa State 27-21) and No. 5 Notre Dame (which beat Stanford 20-13 in overtime) each moved up two spots. All three of them have big challenges directly ahead.

Alabama continued to roll along, routing Missouri 42-10, and Oregon had an even easier week. The Ducks were off. The Crimson Tide is a unanimous No. 1 for the third straight week. The season's first BCS standings were due out late Sunday and Alabama and Oregon were expected to be first and second in that, too.

Both are on the road this week ? Alabama at Tennessee and Oregon at Arizona State on Thursday night ? and there have been more than enough reminders recently that there are no sure things away from home.

South Carolina was handed its first loss at LSU, a 23-21 setback that dropped the Gamecocks to No. 9.

"That was Death Valley," Tigers coach Les Miles said triumphantly afterward. "That was the place where opponents' dreams come to die ? and it was spectacular."

The Gamecocks' next stop is Gainesville, Fla. The Gators are unbeaten and have their best ranking since the end of the 2009 season, Tim Tebow's last playing at the Swamp.

South Carolina-Florida could very well determine who wins the SEC East.

Kansas State takes its best ranking since 2000 to Morgantown, W.Va., where the Mountaineers will be looking to bounce back from a startling 49-14 loss at Texas Tech. Kansas State is the only unbeaten team left in the Big 12, and Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein seems to have taken the Heisman Trophy front-runner status from West Virginia's Geno Smith.

As for Notre Dame, the Irish are at home to face BYU (4-3), before a road trip to No. 10 Oklahoma on Oct. 27.

A third straight week of shuffling at the top of the media poll would be no surprise.

___

MOVING UP

For all of LSU's offensive issues during the first half of the season, the Tigers are back where they need to be, primed to pounce in the national title race.

The Tigers moved up three spots to No. 6 in the AP rankings Sunday after beating South Carolina.

LSU's passing game still lacks pop. Zach Mettenberger was 12 for 25 for 148 yards against the Gamecocks, and at some point he'll need to do more. Maybe when LSU visits surprising No. 20 Texas A&M, with fast-rising Heisman contender Johnny Manziel guiding the top-ranked offense in the SEC.

The Tigers can take comfort in the fact that a patchwork offense line and their seemingly limitless stable of talented tailbacks were able to wear down a good South Carolina defense. LSU had 258 yards rushing on 53 carries. And, of course, the Tigers' defense is still nasty.

Alabama comes to Death Valley on Nov. 3, and it could still be a game that decides the SEC West, and maybe a spot ? or two ? in the BCS title game.

___

MOVING DOWN

Lubbock, Texas, is 1,465 miles from Morgantown, W.Va., the longest trip West Virginia signed up for when it joined the Big 12.

It must have felt twice that long heading back home after Texas Tech ripped the Mountaineers.

The loss sent West Virginia tumbling from No. 5 to No. 17 as the Mountaineers couldn't again overcome a porous defense. Only seven teams in major college football are allowing more yards per game than the Mountaineers, who are yielding 496 after the Red Raiders put up 676.

Smith and the offense couldn't even keep it close. The senior quarterback was a pedestrian 29 for 55 for 275 yards with a touchdown pass.

So where does that leave coach Dana Holgorsen's team? Still, very much in contention in the Big 12. A win against Kansas State on Saturday puts the Mountaineers back at the top of the standings. And no doubt Smith will put up Heisman-worthy numbers the rest of the way.

But it's hard to imagine West Virginia being able to avoid another loss or two with so many problems defensively.

Texas Tech moved back into the rankings at No. 18.

___

IN AND OUT

The last time Ohio University was ranked, a man had not yet walked on the moon.

The unbeaten Bobcats are back this week, coming in at No. 25. Ohio finished the 1968 season ranked No. 20, back in the days when the ranking only went to 20.

The Bobcats improved to 7-0 on Saturday with yet another close victory against a Mid-American Conference rival. This time it was a 34-28 win over Akron. Ohio's last three victories have been by a combined 16 points, none by more than seven, and they've come against some of the conference's weakest teams (UMass, Buffalo and Akron).

Former Nebraska coach Frank Solich is in his eighth season in Athens, where he has gone 57-40 (39-20 in conference) but has yet to lead the Bobcats to a MAC title. An unbeaten season could put Ohio in position to become the first team from the MAC to reach the BCS.

Ohio moved in as another high-scoring potential BCS buster fell out. Louisiana Tech's 59-57 loss at Shreveport dropped the Bulldogs out of the rankings and probably ruined any hopes for a BCS bid, but they are heading into the soft part of their schedule. Don't be surprised if La Tech gets back in the rankings soon ? and stays there.

Texas also fell out after a 63-21 loss to Oklahoma that felt like something more than just an embarrassment for the Longhorns.

Mack Brown has been at Texas for 15 seasons. He's won a national championship, played for another and had the Longhorns among the elite programs in the country. There have been a couple of rough patches, especially against Oklahoma, that led to grumbling among the faithful about whether Brown could win the big game. But Brown was always safe.

Over the last three seasons, Texas is 17-14 overall and 7-13 in the Big 12. Oklahoma has won the last two Red River Rivalry games by a combined 118-38. Those rumors about Brown's job status, which mostly got laughed off last season, might become more serious this year.

___

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Ohio State is No. 7 and Cincinnati is No. 21, giving the state of Ohio three ranked teams for the first time since the final AP poll of the 2003 season.

That season Ohio State finished No. 4; Miami, Ohio, with Ben Roethlisberger, was No. 10; and Bowling Green finished 23rd.

___

ODDS & ENDS

A few weeks after West Virginia and Baylor played the highest-scoring game ever between ranked teams (133 points), Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech put up the second highest-scoring game between ranked teams (116 points). ... Ohio State's last two games have both had 101 combined total points.
