R. Kelly Planned Best Of Both Worlds Collabo With Tupac Before Jay-Z

In his upcoming 'Soulacoaster' autobiography, R&B great remembers planning to record with 'Pac and making the Notorious B.I.G. cry.

R. Kelly and Jay-Z changed the landscape of hip-hop and R&B when they dropped their 2002 tag-team album Best of Both Worlds, but according to the Pied Piper, it was the late Tupac Shakur who originally sparked that genre-melding idea.

On Tuesday Rolling Stone ran an excerpt from Kellz's upcoming autobiography, "Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me," and in the chapter titled "Yo Pac! Yo Biggie!" the singer expresses his admiration for the two slain rap greats.

Kelly recalls a 1996 meeting with 'Pac in front of a hotel frequented by rappers and other music industry types. He says they planned to release a collaborative album at that meeting, but the idea came to a tragic end after Shakur was murdered later that year.

"Come September, and it looked like my schedule was opening up just before the holidays. I set up a meeting with Pac for us to plot our strategy, get firm dates and make the musical bomb that we both know would explode all around the world," Kelly wrote. "But another bomb exploded that no one saw coming."

Though he never got the chance to work with Shakur, Kelly and the Notorious B.I.G. did log in a few recording sessions. In 1995 Biggie made a cameo on the singer's "(You to Be) Be Happy," and they hooked up again shortly before B.I.G. was murdered, on 1997's "F--- You Tonight."

R. Kelly described Biggie as a kindred spirit of sorts who appreciated R&B music in ways that most rappers did not. After a night of partying, Kelly remembers playing a piano in a Detroit hotel lobby, writing the chords to what would soon become his Grammy Award-winning single "I Believe I Can Fly." According to the singer, Biggie rolled into the lobby and Kelly played a bare version of the song for his rapper friend, who immediately began to sing praises.

"I'm gonna tell you right now, B, that's a smash. That's a big hit right there. That's a Grammy winner, Rob," Kelly recalled a tearful B.I.G. saying. "They gonna be playing that when you and I have moved on to the other side of time."

"Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me" is due out on June 28.

A park ranger fell about 3,700 feet to his death on Mount Rainier in Washington state Thursday during an operation to rescue four climbers, NBC station King 5 reported.?The National Park Service identified the ranger as Nick Hall, 34, from Maine.?

A statement issued by the park said Hall fell from about 13,700 feet to 10,000 feet on Rainier's northeast side at 4:49 p.m. PT (7:49 p.m. ET) as he was helping two of the climbers evacuate the mountain by helicopter.

?He [Hall] did not respond to attempts to contact him and was not moving. High winds and a rapidly lowering cloud ceiling made rescue efforts extremely difficult, but with the help of Chinook helicopters from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, two of the original climbing party were lifted off the mountain by about 9 p.m. and taken to Madigan Hospital,? the statement said.

?The other two members of the party are spending the night on the mountain with climbing rangers from Mount Rainier National Park ? All four suffered non-life threatening injuries,? it added.

??Climbers reached Ranger Hall several hours after the incident began and found him to be deceased,? the statement said.

The four climbers, from Waco, Texas, had been walking on the Emmons Glacier Route on their way down from the summit, when two of them slipped and fell into a crevasse at about 1:45 p.m. PT, Kevin Bacher, of Mount Rainier National Park, said.

One of the hikers had a working cell phone and was able to notify park rangers. Rescue crews on foot located the climbers and lifted the two men out of the crevasse, then began the process of transferring to the helicopter.

The statement said rescue and recovery efforts would resume Friday morning.

Law enforcement authorities hold a news conference to discuss the recovery of the body of the suspect involved in the shooting death of Mount Rainier National Park Ranger Margaret Anderson.

Hall was a four-year veteran of Mount Rainier National Park's climbing program and a native of Patten, Maine.

On January 1, park ranger?Margaret Anderson was shot dead as she tried to stop Benjamin Colton Barnes,?a fleeing suspect, near the Longmire Ranger Station in Mount Rainier National Park.

Anderson is remembered on the National Park's Officer Down Memorial Page.

New Pakistan PM candidate faces arrest warrant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A Pakistani judge issued an arrest warrant Thursday for the ruling party's candidate for prime minister over allegations he illegally imported drugs, injecting fresh uncertainty into efforts to replace the previous premier who was ousted by the Supreme Court.

The warrant was announced after the Pakistan People's Party nominated Makhdoom Shahabuddin, raising suspicion it was politically motivated and aimed at blocking the president's choice to replace Yousuf Raza Gilani. The anti-narcotic force is run by the army, another power center in Pakistan's chaotic polity and one that has at times allied with the judiciary to target elected governments.

Gilani was dismissed Tuesday because he refused to initiate a corruption case against President Asif Ali Zardari, the head of the PPP.

The order, which left the country without a Cabinet, was an escalation of a bruising power struggle between the government and activist judges, who critics say are unfairly prioritizing cases against the government. The arrest warrant is sign that tensions may continue, distracting the country even as its relations with the United States are facing major strains.

Shahabuddin, the outgoing textile minister and a veteran PPP lawmaker, was Zardari's first choice for the prime minister. The 65-year-old appeared defiant as he filed nomination papers ahead of a scheduled vote in the parliament on Friday. But by Thursday evening, two other People's Party stalwarts were being mentioned as likely replacement candidates.

The PPP has a majority in parliament, and together with its coalition partners should have the numbers to get their choice elected. General elections are scheduled for March next year, but most assume the political upheaval will ensure they will be brought forward to the fall.

The arrest warrant was issued by an anti-narcotics court judge in the northern city of Rawalpindi, according to an officer at the anti-narcotics force and a law ministry official.

Shahabuddin was accused over his role in a scandal over the import of a drug that can be used to make methamphetamine, said the officials, who didn't give their names because they were not authorized to speak to the media. He was health minister at the time.

Gilani's son also has also been linked to the case, which revolves around two Pakistani pharmaceutical companies that allegedly used political connections to obtain huge amounts of ephedrine in 2010. They are suspected of diverting it to people in the drug trade who could have used it to make methamphetamines worth billions of dollars.

Gilani's son, who was also issued with an arrest warrant Thursday, and Shahabuddin have denied any wrongdoing.

Shahabuddin was asked about the arrest warrant after filing his nomination at the parliament. He replied with a line from a poem about not being afraid of "hostile winds" and thanked the PPP and its coalition partners for choosing him.

The PPP said two other candidates ? lawmaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and outgoing information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira ? also had filed papers in the event that Shahabuddin withdraws. Conflicting media reports said each candidate was gathering support within the party and its coalition partners.

The next prime minister will likely quickly face the same order from the Supreme Court to investigate Zardari as Gilani did, meaning tensions will continue to roil the fragile political setup. The Gilani government was widely criticized for exacerbating ? or doing nothing ? to address the massive economic and security challenges in the country. No one expects any changes under a new premier.

Shahabuddin comes from a wealthy, landowning family based in the central Pakistani district of Rahim Yar Khan.

His father had served as minister in the cabinets of two Pakistani governments. He also served as minister for finance and health in the current government.

Relations between Washington and Islamabad are strained over a host of issues, including blocked war supply lines to Afghanistan and Pakistan's links to the Afghan Taliban. The Obama administration has tried to work with Pakistan to get it more aligned to its goals, but has had little success. The country's northwest remains a haven for al-Qaida and associated international militant groups, while the country's ties to the Afghan Taliban mean it will have role in bringing them to the negotiating table, or preventing civil war when the U.S. withdraws its combat troops in 2014.

In violence Thursday, a bomb attached to a donkey-drawn cart exploded at a Sunni shrine in the northwestern city of Peshawar, killing two children, police officer Zafar Khan said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast. Taliban militants have often targeted such shrines in the past because they consider them a form of idol worship that is forbidden in their strict interpretation of Islam.

Some restrictions on dissident artist Ai ending

BEIJING (AP) ? Dissident artist Ai Weiwei gained a bit of freedom Thursday when authorities said they would lift domestic travel restrictions imposed a year earlier, but he was still barred from leaving the country.

A notice from Beijing's Chaoyang District police headquarters that Ai received Thursday said his domestic travel restrictions will expire Friday, exactly a year after his release following nearly three months of detention. Ai, 55, had been the highest-profile target in a crackdown in spring 2011 to stop Chinese from imitating democratic uprisings in the Arab World. Despite the treatment, he remains an outspoken government critic.

Ai said police told him Thursday he cannot travel outside China because he remains under investigation on charges of pornography and illegal exchange of foreign currency, which Ai said are far-fetched.

Ai, known for his mocking, satirical art, was detained April 3, 2011, at Beijing's airport. Following his release on June 22 of that year, he was stripped of his passport and required to be constantly available for questioning.

Ai told The Associated Press on Thursday that the police would return his passport only on the condition that he not travel abroad.

"I feel this is still an illegal practice," said Ai, who has plans to travel to Washington D.C. later this year for an art exhibit, as well as several other foreign cities.

"If I am not allowed to leave the country, I will have to cancel the trips, but I will make some efforts," Ai said.

In the past year, Ai said he was required to report to the police weekly, stay away from the Internet and receive no foreigners, though he had ignored some of the restrictions.

Beijing police had asked him not to leave the capital over the past year but did not make the same request Thursday, Ai said.

He also said police ? instead of a blanket ban ? asked him Thursday not to accept interviews from foreign media "as much as possible." He swiftly defied that order, just as he did with earlier restrictions on giving interviews or posting comments online.

The easing of his restrictions is no reason for celebration, Ai said. "The string is always there, and I have no sense of security," Ai said. "There's no law to protect me, for there is no check on power in China."

Tang Jitian, a rights lawyer who was disbarred last year after he represented a member of the outlawed Falun Gong spiritual movement, said the lifting of the restrictions ? if not followed by harsher punishments ? likely means the police do not have sufficient evidence or legal ground to bring charges against Ai.

Ai is among dozens of rights activists, lawyers and others who have been detained, put under house arrest or disappeared in the past year and a half. Several of those who have been released have kept almost totally silent ever since.

Following Ai's release last year, his design company was presented with a 15 million yuan ($2.4 million) bill for back taxes and fines that he has contested.

A hearing on Ai's countersuit against the tax office was held Wednesday, though Ai was barred from attending.

The outcome of the countersuit was unclear, but Ai was not optimistic.

"The trial ended in a bureaucratic way," he said. "There was no decision on the verdict of the case, but I can expect the outcome to be far from ideal."

The authorities also have accused Ai of spreading pornography online and exchanging foreign money illegally.

The artist said the pornography charge stems from a naked photo of him and four netizens from two years ago. He said the photo was taken "for fun," though it has been interpreted as a political satire of the Chinese Community Party's rule.

Private exchange of foreign currency is common in China, though officially only banks can do that.

"Both are excuses for the police to assign me a crime and restrict my mobility," Ai said.

Greeks vote in critical election

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greeks were voting Sunday for the second time in six weeks in what was arguably their country's most critical election in 40 years, with the country's treasured place within the European Union's joint currency in the balance.

The political turmoil sparked by a two-year financial crisis has roiled markets across the world, with fears that victory by parties that have vowed to cancel the country's international bailout agreements and accompanying austerity measures could see Greece forced out of the euro.

That in turn would likely drag down other financially troubled countries and rip apart the euro itself.

The last opinion polls published before a two-week pre-election ban showed the radical left Syriza party of Alexis Tsipras running neck-and-neck with the conservative New Democracy party of Antonis Samaras. But no party is likely to win enough votes to form a government on its own, meaning a coalition will have to be formed to avoid yet another election.

Inconclusive elections on May 6 resulted in no party winning enough votes to form a government, and coalition talks collapsed after 10 days. The vote, which also sent the formerly governing socialist PASOK party plunging to historic lows, sent a very clear message that Greeks have lost patience with the deep austerity imposed in return for the country receiving billions of euros (dollars) in rescue loans from other eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund.

"I'd like to see something change for the country in general, including regarding the bailout," said Vassilis Stergiou, an early-morning voter at an Athens polling station. "But at least for us to get organized and at the very least do something."

Tsipras, a 37-year-old former student activist, has vowed to rip up Greece's bailout agreements and repeal the austerity measures, which have included deep spending cuts on everything from health care to education and infrastructure, as well as tax hikes and reductions of salaries and pensions.

The cuts have left the country mired in a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.

Greece has been dependent on the rescue loans since May 2010, after sky-high borrowing rates left it locked out of the international markets following years of profligate spending and falsifying financial data.

Tsipras has argued that the terms of the loans were too harsh, but argues that repealing them will not mean Greece will have to leave the euro. Opinion polls show 80 percent of Greeks want to remain in the euro.

But his pledges, which include canceling planned privatizations, nationalizing banks and rolling back cuts to minimum wages and pensions, have horrified European leaders, as well as many Greeks. Tsipras' opponents argue that the inexperienced young politician is out of touch with reality, and that his policies will force the country out of the euro and lead to poverty for years to come.

Tsipras has accused his rivals of attempting to terrorize the population by casting him as the man who will ruin the country.

For his part, Samaras has cast Sunday's choice as one between the euro and returning to the country's old currency, the drachma. Although he voted against Greece's first bailout in 2010, when his party was in opposition, he backed the second bailout agreed on late last year. He has vowed to renegotiate some of the terms of the accompanying austerity, but insists the top priority is for the country to remain in Europe's joint currency.

"The main thing we will decide on is the dilemma, euro or drachma," he said during his final pre-election rally in central Athens on Friday.

Tsipras, speaking in the northern city of Thessaloniki on the same evening, insisted this was not true.

"There is no dilemma about the euro. It is the last, desperate trick by Mr. Samaras," he said.

European leaders have warned that Greece could be left outside the 17-nation eurozone if it pulls out of its bailout commitments.

"I respect the Greek people," newly elected French President Francois Hollande said during a Greek television interview earlier this week.

"But I must warn them, because it is my duty, because I am a friend of Greece, that if the impression is given that the Greeks want to move away from the commitments that were taken and abandon all prospects of revival, then there will be countries in the Eurozone that will want to end the presence of Greece in the eurozone."

Nearly 10 million people are eligible to vote in the country of about 11 million people. Polls close at 7pm (1600 GMT), with official results expected a few hours later.

"Today the Greek people speak. Tomorrow a new era for Greece begins," Samaras said after casting his ballot in a small town in southern Greece, the first of the main politicians to do so.

As Greeks went to the polls, more than 250 firefighters and soldiers battled a fire raging south of the Greek capital since Saturday afternoon. Local authorities said several houses were burned. Gale-force winds were hampering the efforts to extinguish the blaze, and Greece asked for help in water-dropping planes from Italy, France and Croatia.

Three firefighters suffered burns on Saturday, while four people were arrested for allegedly starting the fire by accident during welding work at a construction site.

Stage collapses before Radiohead concert; 1 dead

TORONTO (AP) ? Toronto paramedics say one person is dead and another is seriously hurt after a stage collapsed while setting up for a Radiohead concert.

They say two other people were injured and are being assessed.

Some at Downsview Park ahead of the show are saying on Twitter that the area has been cleared by emergency crews.

The venue said on its website that the concert has been canceled.

Ice-T says rap music got Obama elected president

According to Ice-T, we have rap music to credit for the election of President Barack Obama.

During an appearance on Wednesday's episode of Today, the rapper-actor shared some interesting political theories with hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.

"[Rap] put Barack Obama in the presidency. If it wasn't for rap, white people wouldn't have been so open to vote for somebody like Barack Obama."

Gifford countered by saying she had hoped the public had supported Obama because he was a "good candidate, and not because [he is] black."

While acknowledging Gifford's point, the Law & Order: SVU star wasn't swayed from his stance. "That had to happen after their eyes were opened up, and hip-hop was what brought us together. Hip-hop's what took down a lot of those boundaries. Music did that."

NBA Finals: LeBron at his best? Can KD be stopped?

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Miami Heat evened the NBA Finals at one game apiece with a 100-96 victory over the Oklahoma City on Thursday night. LeBron James had another finals career high, Miami jumped out to an 18-2 lead and had to stave off a furious Thunder rally to gain the split on the road.

Now that the series shifts to South Beach here are five questions and answers on what to look for in Game 3 on Sunday:

CAN LEBRON BE EVEN BETTER? LeBron James has set finals career highs in the first two games of the series: He had 30 points in Game 1, 32 in Game 2. He could go for 34 in Game 3 if he continues to make a living in the lane and at the free throw line like he did Thursday night. James put his head down and simply bulled his way to the basket numerous times on his way to 32 points, rather than settle for long jumpers that limit his effectiveness. The aggressive style led to 12 free throws, and he made all of them, one shy of his playoff best for most attempts without a miss. "You can't just put one guy on me and allow him to be on an island and defend me 1-on-1. It's about being aggressive and taking what the defense gives me," James said. "When I shoot double-digit free throws, that means I know personally I'm being aggressive when I'm getting to the rim. At the end of the day, it's helping our team."

WHO'S WINNING: DWYANE WADE OR RUSSELL WESTBROOK? Through two games, the matchup is about even - and incredibly fun to watch. Wade struggled with his shot in Game 1, but matched Westbrook's contributions in crunch time during Game 2. Wade banked in a jumper to interrupt Oklahoma City's 12-3 fourth-quarter rally and added another jumper and the assist on Chris Bosh's last-minute dunk. Westbrook countered with a three-point play, a driving layup and a putback dunk to keep Oklahoma City in it. If either can be more efficient, it could be the difference in the series.

WILL THE THUNDER ROAR IN MIAMI? Despite their youth, the Thunder have played some of their best basketball on the road this postseason. They swept both road games against Dallas in the first round, then earned a split against the Lakers and pulled out a crucial Game 5 win at San Antonio. And largely, they've avoided the sluggish starts that they've been able to overcome at the friendly home confines of Chesapeake Energy Arena. Plus, consider this: Only two teams have swept Games 3-5 on their home court since the league went to the 2-3-2 finals model in 1985. That said, one of them was the Heat in 2006, the other was Detroit two years earlier.

IS SHANE BATTIER THE X-FACTOR? Battier has joked that Miami's Big Three garner enough attention that the Thunder forget he's even on the court, and he's been making them pay. He had a 13-point first half in Game 1 before the Heat seemed to be the ones forgetting about him, and he was even bigger with five 3-pointers in Game 2. None was bigger than one he banked-in with the shot clock running down and the Thunder within 87-83. He called it a "very fortunate bounce" but Miami will definitely take it - and keep going back to him if Oklahoma City doesn't guard him.

CAN THE HEAT STOP KEVIN DURANT IN THE FOURTH QUARTER? No one else has been able to do it consistently this postseason, but Miami got just enough stops to get by in Game 2. The Heat were able to get him in foul trouble but Durant played with five fouls for the final 10 1/2 minutes, scoring 16 points in that span. He has only fouled out twice in his five-year career, so that's an unlikely option. Instead, it'll fall on Battier and James - and maybe the law of averages - to slow Durant's inhuman pace of 16 1/2 points per fourth quarter in the series.

Firefighting fleet grows due to summer, beetles

President Barack Obama, prodded by Western lawmakers, signed a bill on Wednesday authorizing four more large air tankers to fight wildfires this summer and to relieve the stress on an aging fleet.

The move was especially welcome in Colorado, where the state's largest wildfire in 25 years could still be in its infancy and where forests killed by bark beetles could explode if fires take hold there.

The beetle epidemic "could be a major factor" in terms of what happens this summer, Mike Ferris, a National Incident Fire Center spokesman, told msnbc.com. "You've got millions of acres of dead standing timber" not just in Colorado but across much of the West.

This year is running behind last year in terms of acres burned, but "we're still early in the fire season and just now starting an uphill climb," noted Ferris.

The bill allows the U.S. Forest Service to contract for up to seven new large air tankers, four this year and three next year.

The aircraft will be able to carry 3,000 gallons of retardant, compared to the 2,000 on the existing, older aircraft, Forest Service spokeswoman Jennifer Jones told msnbc.com. On top of that, these "next generation" aircraft will be faster.

The service now has contracts providing 17 large tankers -- five of which are deployed to a single incident, the massive High Park Fire in Colorado.

Crews there fear the fire could spread into a national forest where 70 percent of the trees have been killed by beetles.

The incident commander there said Tuesday that while he's had all the air resources he needs so far, he fears that could change.

If other areas see large fires, Bill Hahnenberg told reporters, "we may see pressure to release those earlier rather than later."

Colorado Sen. Mark Udall, in lobbying for the tanker provision, cited his concern for communities surrounded by beetle-killed trees.

Northern Colorado "is a beautiful area," he said in a statement Monday, "but it has been severely impacted by the expansion of the bark beetle epidemic in the past two to three years."

Congress passed the tanker provision after the June 3 crash of a firefighting plane that killed its two pilots. The 1962 Lockheed P2V was designed as a Cold War-era submarine attack plane and is typical of the aging firefighting fleet.

Lawmakers, some of whom have been pushing for a fleet upgrade for some time, cited the crash as a reason to take action.

"These incidents indicate the need to swiftly replace the aging air fleet and begin contracting new planes for the Forest Service fleet," Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., said in a letter to the Forest Service. "Unfortunately, the Forest Service has yet to provide a long-term pathway for aircraft replacement."

Udall, for his part, is trying to get more funding for removal of dead trees as part of a farm bill now before Congress.

"We have limited resources and need to focus on removing trees in and around critical infrastructure, like roads and powerlines," he told msnbc.com.
