11 New Warning Signs Help Spot Mental Illness in Children (LiveScience.com)

To help children with undiagnosed mental disorders, researchers today (Oct. 28) issued a list of 11 easy-to-recognize warning signs for use by parents and others in the community.

Among the signs: feeling sad or withdrawn for two weeks or more may indicate depression, and intense fears or worries that get in the way of daily activities may indicate an anxiety disorder.

The list is intended to help close the gap between the number of children who suffer from mental illness and those who actually receive treatment for it.

Studies indicate that three out of four children with mental health disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), eating disorders and bipolar disorder, go unrecognized and do not receive the care they need, the researchers say.

Parents who notice any of the signs in their child should take him or her to see a pediatrician or mental health professional for a psychiatric evaluation, the researchers said.

The researchers hope the list will help parents distinguish between normal behaviors of childhood and true signs of mental illness.

"Many people [have] been confused about whether their child has a problem," said Dr. Peter S. Jensen, a professor of psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic, who helped compile the list. "If you have a simple yes, no decision, it becomes easier," Jensen said.

Identifying a psychiatric disorder early in life will also allow children to receive treatment sooner, which will likely make the treatments more effective, the researchers said. Some children go 10 years between the time their symptoms appear and when they receive treatment, Darcy Gruttadaro, director of the Child & Adolescent Action Center at the National Alliance on Mental Illness, said at a news conference about the warning signs.

The list is published today in the journal Pediatrics. It was spurred by a 2001 request by the U.S. surgeon general to develop a list similar to the one created in 1971 to help people recognize the early signs of cancer.

To come up with the list, the committee reviewed mental health studies involving more than 6,000 children. They made sure the symptoms on their list could identify the majority of kids with certain mental health disorders.

The 11 warnings signs are as follows:

  • Feeling very sad or withdrawn for two or more weeks
  • Seriously trying to harm or kill yourself, or making plans to do so
  • Sudden overwhelming fear for no reason, sometimes with a racing heart or fast breathing
  • Involved in multiple fights, using a weapon, or wanting badly to hurt others
  • Severe, out- of-control behavior that can hurt yourself or others
  • Not eating, throwing up or using laxatives to make yourself lose weight
  • Intensive worries or fears that get in the way of daily activities
  • Extreme difficulty in concentrating or staying still that puts you in physical danger or causes school failure
  • Repeated use of drugs or alcohol
  • Severe mood swings that cause problems in relationships
  • Drastic changes in your behavior or personality

The signs are indented to be mental health disorder "profiles" and not specific diagnoses in and of themselves. For accurate diagnoses, parents should seek help from their health care provider, the researchers said.

To avoid potential alarm from parents and over-diagnosis of mental disorders, the researchers said they designed the list to be conservative. That is, these signs will not be evident in every child who has a mental health disorder. Of the 15 percent of youth estimated to have mental illness, the profiles will identify about 8 percent, Jensen said.

Pass it on: Eleven warning signs can be used by parents to help diagnose mental illness in their children.

9 astounding Halloween costumes (Yahoo! News)

It takes a little geek plus a little cute to make a memorable costume

When you consider pumpkin carving and Halloween light shows, it becomes clear that Halloween is the most creative celebration of the year. The costumes, though, are what really knock Halloween creativity out of the park. Everyone gets to decide what they want to be for Halloween, and you can go as far with your costume as you'd like.

Consumers get bombarded with ads pushing professional and retail costumes every year. The true Halloween aficionado knows, however, that it's the homemade stuff that makes a costume special. In the spirit of the holiday, check out these nine amazing homemade costumes that will inspire your trick or treat weekend.

These vintage video game costumes are a home run

Pac-Man
This Pac-Man costume is more than just a static creation. Slip inside this big, yellow binge eater and move the mouth open and closed. Check out this amazing video to get a better idea of this dynamic costume in action. Pac-Man is a feat of both engineering and creativity. (Image credit:?Matthew Varas)

A costume only a nerd could love

TI-83+ calculator
This creative costumer reached deep into his memories of school, science, and mathematics to design a TI-83 calculator costume. The TI-83 is a time-honored gadget that helps students plot graphs, handle advanced formulae, and achieve ever-higher scholastic feats.

People who saw the costume for the first time often mistook it for a smartphone. The creator says folks would push the buttons and ask what kind of reception the costume could get. In reality, though, the only connection a TI-83 has with a smartphone is that you could use it to calculate your early termination fees.

Krang the Conqueror
Krang is a villain from the early Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. The unique thing about Krang's design is that he's a brain-like creature with hands. He rode around inside a human-sized robot suit. Halloween costumer?Melissa Dunphy has recreated the effect with hilarious success. Watch while her husband shuffles around in the?robot costume,?Krang shouting threats the whole time from inside the belly. Krang's arms even move to heighten the effect.

The most adorable Ewok ever

Ewok
There's almost nothing as adorable as a small child encased within an Ewok costume. Not only is the outfit too cute to stand, the warm layers and thick fur go a long way toward keeping warm in the chilly October weather. And who doesn't want to see a child dressed up as such an endearing character? Add accessories like a leather bag and a walking stick, and that Ewok costume steps up to legendary status.

This costume is even better because the trick-or-treater clearly knows how to work it like an Ewok. That stride looks like he's ready to walk onto the set of Return of the Jedi. Find a way to get some lightsaber-wielding kittens in there, and this will be the last costume you ever need. (Image credit:?razorsheldon)

An enlightened youngster

Baby Lama
This baby's parents were aiming for a costume that takes advantage of a child's bald head. Using clothes from the doll section at a local craft store, baby Grace is transformed into the Dalai Lama.

Grace's content, calm expression serves to enhance the ensemble. The child-sized glasses are especially adorable. Last year, Grace dressed up as Uncle Fester from The Addams Family. It makes sense to get all the bald characters out of the way early in life, because that smooth head won't last much longer. (Image credit:?tbudd)

A despicable crew

Disney collection
Normally, you have to be very young to wear a costume in Disney. Adults aren't allowed to play dress-up in those magical kingdoms, a right reserved for the people who get paid to portray the characters inside the parks.

For special occasions like Halloween, though, Mickey loosens those rules. Check out this carful of costumed park-goers enjoying a ride as Honorary Costume Party Guests. With so many of the minions from Despicable Me all piled in one vehicle, you know despicable evil is going down somewhere. (Image credit:?Elizabeth Harper)

Who didn't want to be a fireman as a kid?

Firefighter in his own truck
Firefighters are awesome. Almost every little boy out there has a righteous and thorough interest in fire trucks, firefighters, and the heroic task of saving lives. The people who do that job deserve the adulation, and thousands of kids deliver it in the form of fun costumes every Halloween.

This fire truck costume is a fantastic way of accomplishing the task. The trick-or-treater gets the both of both worlds ??he gets to be both the fire engine and the firefighter. (Image credit:?Brett Holt)

Fully functional camera
This costume (top) is amazing in more than one way. Not only is it a creative costume, helping Tyler dress up as a favorite camera, but the costume is actually capable of taking photographs. It has its own shutter release button and built-in screen. Tyler even rigged the costume so that it can control his strobe lights. (Image credit:?Tyler Card)

Creepy? Yes. Awesome? Yes.

Frankenstein's monster
The final costume in our montage is a classic: Frankenstein's monster. The creature was spotted roaming the streets of Minneapolis, where we can hope no mobs armed themselves with torches and pitchforks to chase him around. There's something to be said for the classics, and you don't get any more classic than this monster masher. (Image credit:?Elkman)

Unleash your inner creative ghoul
No matter what costume you choose for Halloween, make sure you let your inner creativity out and do something spectacular. Whether you're building a high-tech costume like Tyler Card's working camera or a fun, peaceful outfit like Grace's Dalai Lama, you're only limited by your imagination. Go out and trick or treat in style!

IDC: Samsung, ZTE see jump in mobile shipments, Apple slides to fifth place

Q3 earnings reports have been pouring in over the past few days, which means it's time to check in with IDC on the state of the mobile market. The research firm's latest report, released today, is something of a mixed bag. On the one hand, Q3 global shipments increased by 12.8 percent year-over-year -- higher than the 9.3 percent that IDC had predicted for the quarter and the 9.8 percent growth observed last quarter. At the same time, however, the market grew at the second slowest pace in two years and shipments to Western Europe and the US actually declined over the year, something the company attributes to more restrained consumer spending and more widespread economic uncertainty.

On the company level, both Samsung and ZTE came away as the biggest winners this quarter; Sammy's shipments increased by 23 percent over the year, good for second place, while ZTE's shot up by a whopping 57.9 percent, launching the company into fourth place. Apple, meanwhile, saw 26.2 percent growth in its shipments and a slight bump in market share, but still couldn't avoid getting leapfrogged by ZTE and dropping down to fifth place. And then there's LG, which had by far the worst quarter, relative to Q3 2010. The manufacturer saw shipments decline by nearly 26 percent over the year, while its market share slipped to 5.4 percent. All these horses, however, are still chasing Nokia, which saw a small drop in shipments, but managed to hang on to the top spot, with over 106 million shipments during the quarter -- good for 27 percent of the market. For more numbers and insight, check out the full PR after the break.

UFC 137 video: ?Cowboy? Cerrone wants all the big boys, says Melendez doesn?t deserve title shot

Donald Cerrone admits that the mental game held him back in the past. He's traditionally been a big talker, but it didn't always translate in the Octagon. That's changed since the middle of 2010.

In recent fights, it's all come together for "Cowboy," who looks to add to a five-fight win streak this Saturday against Denis Siver at UFC 137.

The new Cerrone is finishing fights in brutal fashion and he's retained the ability to talk trash with the best of them. During UFC 137 workout day, Cerrone called out Gilbert Melendez, Ben Henderson and even featherweight Nam Phan. An extremely juiced Cerrone said he wants another fight before the end of 2011.

Cerrone went into further detail on Melendez and Henderson during a Monday interview with Larry Pepe.

"I don't think [Melendez] should get an instant title shot. I don't think he should be able to come over from Strikeforce and get an instant title shot. I think he should come over from Strikeforce and have to fight Cowboy," Cerrone told ProMMARadio (49:00 mark).

The 28-year-old said if he was given a choice of Melendez or Henderson, he'd choose BenHen because he was "embarrassed" by him at WEC 48 when he was choked out.

Cerrone's finished 3-of-4 fights, but his last victory over Charles Oliveira was huge. He did it via strikes.

"When I was kickboxing, I was knocking people out all the time. I come over to MMA with smaller gloves and a faster pace and I can't even touch anybody. There's was definitely a lot of doubt. 'What am I doing wrong? What aren't I doing?' Slowly, I'm starting to find me again and figure out where I need to be and go have fun."

Official: Ex-Gulf cartel boss' nephew held in US (AP)

McALLEN, Texas ? A man arrested on federal drug and immigration charges in South Texas is believed to be the nephew of the former boss of Mexico's Gulf Cartel and was a rising player in the drug trafficking network, a U.S. law enforcement official said Wednesday.

Rafael Cardenas Vela was arrested last week following a traffic stop in Port Isabel, a Gulf coast town that sits across the causeway from South Padre Island. He is charged with conspiracy to possess and distribute drugs and using a fraudulent passport, according to federal court records.

The law enforcement official familiar with the case told The Associated Press on Wednesday that authorities believe Cardenas Vela is the nephew of Osiel Cardenas Guillen and was a rising player in the cartel's operations. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the case. Cardenas Guillen was extradited to the U.S. in 2006 from Mexico and sentenced to 25 years in prison last year.

Angela Dodge, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Houston, said in an email that "we understand there is a familial relationship," but declined to comment beyond that.

A call to Cardenas Vela's attorney was not immediately returned.

According to court records unsealed this week, special agents from Homeland Security Investigations, a branch of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, interviewed Cardenas Vela after Port Isabel police made the traffic stop. Port Isabel Police said they did not make the arrest and do not write reports for traffic stops.

Initially Cardenas Vela presented a valid Mexican passport and U.S. visa under the name Pedro Garcia Gonzalez, but the agents determined that was not his true identity. He then admitted that he has been involved in the transportation and importation of marijuana and cocaine into the U.S. for several years. He told agents that two years ago he sold about five tons of marijuana to people he knew would import it into the U.S.

Cardenas Vela had been scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Brownsville Wednesday afternoon, but his attorney waived his detention hearing Tuesday.

ICE officials did not immediately return calls requesting comment Wednesday.

Perry wants flat tax with some popular deductions

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry proposed a sweeping economic plan Tuesday that includes a flat tax proposal, private retirement accounts for Social Security, a lower corporate tax rate and reforms aimed at keeping Medicare solvent.

In a pitch to right-wing conservatives, the Texas governor outlined a proposal he calls "Cut, Balance and Grow" that he says is bolder and more aggressive than what his Republican rivals or President Barack Obama would do.

"America is under a crushing burden of debt, and the president simply offers larger deficits and the politics of class division," Perry said. "Others simply offer microwaved plans with warmed-over reforms based on current ingredients."

In his speech, Perry outlined a broad plan that would make fundamental changes to the tax code and to the nation's entitlement programs.

After weeks of calling Social Security a "Ponzi scheme," he offered five concrete principles for reforming the program. Perry said he wants to keep benefits intact for current retirees, but allow younger workers to choose to put their income into private accounts instead. He wants to allow states and local governments to opt out of the federal program and invest in different funds instead. And he wants to raise the retirement age for younger workers.

Perry also wants to make major changes to Medicare. His plan would allow Americans to receive a payment or a credit for the purchase of health insurance instead of the direct benefits provided through the current program. He would also gradually raise the Medicare eligibility age and pay people benefits based on their income levels.

Perry's plan sets a flat 20 percent income tax rate, but also gives taxpayers the option of sticking with their current rate. He would also maintain popular deductions for families making less than $500,000 a year and end taxes on Social Security benefits. Perry would end corporate loopholes and lower the general corporate tax rate to 20 percent.

Many elements of Perry's plan are controversial ? and others have tried and failed to pass them. President George W. Bush tried to add private accounts to Social Security, but the proposal was widely condemned and did not pass.

"I am not na?ve. I know this idea will be attacked," Perry said of the proposal. "Opposition to this simple measure is based on a simple supposition: that the people are not smart enough to look out for themselves."

President Barack Obama's campaign immediately criticized Perry's plan as hurtful to middle class Americans. Perry's plan, Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt said, "would shift a greater share of taxes away from large corporations and the wealthiest onto the backs of the middle class."

The major policy rollout is a critical part of Perry's efforts to right a struggling campaign. It's an opportunity to demonstrate a heft and seriousness that wasn't on display during recent debates.

Distracting from Perry's speech, however, were new comments he made questioning whether Obama was born in the United States, a debunked controversy that centered on Obama's birth certificate.

In an interview with CNBC, Perry said it was "fun to ? to poke" at the president on the birth certificate issue. "I don't have a clue about where the president ? and what this birth certificate says," Perry said. He was defending an interview he did with Parade magazine, when he said he did not have a "definitive answer" about whether Obama was born in the United States.

Republican strategist Karl Rove ripped Rick Perry for casting doubt on Obama's birth. "You associate yourself with a nutty view like that, and you damage yourself," Rove told Fox News.

But the comments do appeal to a segment of the Republican Party's right wing ? a group Perry is clearly trying to court. Perry's policy speech Tuesday sets him distinctly to the right of chief rival Mitt Romney, who wants to make less sweeping changes to the tax code.

The birth certificate comments and policy rollout comes as Perry prepares to air TV ads in Iowa and has hired a roster of experienced national campaign operatives to help him. Perry's chief adviser on the economic plan is former presidential candidate Steve Forbes, who proposed a 17 percent flat tax when he ran for president in 1996.

It's taken Perry about 2 1/2 months to put together an economic policy package, and he's had to attend the series of debates without his detailed proposal. Romney also has attacked him repeatedly for not having a plan. Romney released a 59-point jobs plan in early September, about three months after officially announcing his bid.

Perry's plan would make more dramatic changes than Romney's. While Perry's plan includes the flat tax, Romney would lower rates on corporations and on savings and investment income for middle-class Americans.

Back in 1996, Romney criticized Forbes' flat tax plan as a "tax cut for fat cats." In the CNBC interview, Perry said if Romney renews that criticism, "he ought to look in the mirror, I guess. I consider him to be a fat cat."

Perry chose South Carolina, where he announced he was running for president, to unveil his economic plan. The first-in-the-South primary state is critical to his path to the nomination, though he has fallen in the polls here just as he has dropped nationally.

He also planned a news conference in the state capital, Columbia, and a fundraiser at the home of former South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson, his top South Carolina adviser.

Bamboo electric scooter takes green to a whole new level (Yahoo! News)

Have your eco-friendly transport with a side of eco-friendly

How can you make an electric scooter even more green? Make it out of bamboo! The concept of using bamboo as a construction material for vehicles is starting to gain a foothold, and Antoine Fritsch of the French firm Fritsch-Durisotti has unveiled the T20 electric scooter, which features an eco-friendly bamboo frame.

With a range of 25 miles and a top speed of 22 miles per hour, the T20 offers a stylish option for zipping around town. Or it would, but sadly it's only a concept design ? Fritsch-Durisotti has no intention of actually putting the scooters into mainstream production. The T20 is part of the firm's research to "investigate themes exploring changing behaviors related to sustainable development."

Tebow rallies Broncos to 18-15 OT win over Miami (AP)

Tim Tebow was being shut out in his first start of the season.

What happened next was why all those Broncos fans clamored for the former Florida star. Denver stunned the winless Miami Dolphins by rallying for an 18-15 victory in overtime.

The Broncos (2-4) appeared beaten when they trailed 15-0 with 5:23 left and took over at their 20. At that point Tebow was 4 for 14 for 40 yards.

In the frantic final minutes of the fourth quarter, Tebow led TD drives of 80 and 56 yards sandwiched around a successful onside kick. He scored a 2-point conversion standing up with 17 seconds left to tie the score.

In overtime, Denver's D.J. Williams sacked Matt Moore to force a fumble and recovered it at the Miami 36. Three plays later, Matt Prater hit the winning 52-yard field goal.

"It was my fault we were in that position," Tebow said. "Silly things kept happening. On the sidelines, we were still believing. We wanted it, and they believed in me for more than 60 minutes."

Miami (0-6) extended the NFL's longest losing streak to nine games, leaving the status of embattled coach Tony Sparano even more tenuous.

The St. Louis Rams (0-6) also remained winless after Dallas rookie DeMarco Murray ran for a franchise-record 253 yards in the Cowboys' 34-7 win.

On the other side of the standings, the Green Bay Packers (7-0) extended their winning streak to 13 games with a 33-27 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

The Oakland Raiders' quarterback experiment went far worse than the Broncos', with Kyle Boller and newly acquired Carson Palmer throwing three interceptions each in place of the injured Jason Campbell in a 28-0 loss to the Chiefs.

Bears 24, Bucs 18

At Wembley, England, Matt Forte ran for 145 yards and a touchdown and Chicago held on for the win.

Jay Cutler threw for 226 yards and a touchdown and the Bears (4-3) intercepted Josh Freeman four times to win their second game in a row.

The Buccaneers (4-3) lost for the second time in three years in London.

Tampa Bay scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull within three points. But after a 25-yard field goal by Chicago's Robbie Gould, Freeman was picked off with 37 seconds left by D.J. Moore.

Panthers 33, Redskins 20

At Charlotte, N.C., Cam Newton ran for a touchdown and threw for another in the second half to help Carolina.

Jonathan Stewart also ran for a third-quarter touchdown for the Panthers (2-5), who found themselves playing with the lead almost the entire way for the first time all year.

Newton threw for 256 yards and ran for 59. He scored his seventh touchdown on a 16-yard keeper in the third quarter, tying a record for most TDs rushing by a rookie quarterback since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger.

In the fourth, he had an easy touchdown toss to Brandon LaFell that blew the game open.

Washington's John Beck threw for 279 yards and scored on a short keeper in his first start in four years. But he didn't get the Redskins (3-3) back to the end zone again until they were down 30-13.

Chiefs 28, Raiders 0

At Oakland, Calif., Kendrick Lewis and Brandon Flowers returned interceptions for touchdowns and Kansas City took advantage of rusty quarterback play from the Raiders' Kyle Boller and Carson Palmer.

Boller became the first Raiders quarterback in 13 years to throw three interceptions in the first half, including Lewis' 59-yard score on the first drive of the game for Oakland (4-3). Palmer relieved in the second half and threw three more interceptions, including one that Flowers returned 58 yards to give the Chiefs a 28-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Javier Arenas and Le'Ron McClain each added touchdown runs for the Chiefs (3-3) on a day the Kansas City offense didn't have to do much at all.

Packers 33, Vikings 27

At Minneapolis, Aaron Rodgers kept Green Bay unbeaten with three touchdowns and 335 yards passing, holding off plucky Christian Ponder in the rookie's first start.

Rodgers finished 24 for 30, another near-unstoppable afternoon for him. Ponder was picked off twice in the third quarter by Charles Woodson, who almost grabbed a couple more, but he kept the Vikings in it the whole game after a 71-yard completion on his first play.

Adrian Peterson rushed 24 times for 175 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (1-6), but James Starks put the game away with two big gains for first downs before the 2-minute warning and finished with 75 yards on 13 carries.

Mason Crosby had four field goals for the Packers (7-0), including a franchise record 58-yarder.

Cowboys 34, Rams 7

At Arlington, Texas, DeMarco Murray ran for a franchise-record 253 yards, including a 91-yard touchdown that's the second-longest in club history, to lead Dallas.

In the start of a football-baseball doubleheader between teams from Dallas-Fort Worth and St. Louis, the Cowboys (3-3) emphatically ended their stretch of 11 straight games decided by four points or fewer.

The Rams (0-6) were without quarterback Sam Bradford and were averaging the fewest points in the league even with him. They also had by far the worst run defense in the NFL, allowing 163 yards per game.

Quarterback A.J. Feeley was mediocre in his first start since 2007 and Steven Jackson ran for 70 yards and a TD.

Saints 62, Colts 7

At New Orleans, Drew Brees completed 31 of 35 passes for 325 yards and five touchdowns, and the Saints set a franchise record for points and victory margin against the hapless Colts.

For the first time as a head coach, Sean Payton spent the game up in the coaches' booth, where he could sit comfortably with his broken left leg propped up. He had to like what he saw from his new vantage point.

Brees had two touchdown passes to Marques Colston and one to Darren Sproles in the first quarter. His fourth and fifth touchdown tosses went to second-year tight end Jimmy Graham in the third quarter.

It seemed the Saints could do whatever they wanted, also rushing for 236 yards.

Steelers 32, Cardinals 20

At Glendale, Ariz., Ben Roethlisberger threw 95 yards to Mike Wallace for the longest pass play in Steelers history and Pittsburgh handed Arizona its fifth consecutive loss.

Roethlisberger, 26 of 39 for 361 yards, also had TD passes of 12 yards to Heath Miller and 4 yards to Emmanuel Sanders in the first game between the teams since Pittsburgh's 27-23 thriller over the Cardinals in the 2009 Super Bowl.

Kevin Kolb threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Cardinals (1-5), his first in three games, but he missed several open receivers and, with a blitzing LaMarr Woodley in his face, drew an intentional grounding call in the Cardinals' end zone for a safety.

Pittsburgh (5-2) won its third straight and improved to 2-2 on the road.

Browns 6, Seahawks 3

At Cleveland, Phil Dawson converted two field goals more than 50 yards and had two others blocked, but it was enough for Cleveland.

Seattle came in missing starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and lost running back Marshawn Lynch to a back injury during pregame warmups.

The Browns (3-3) didn't reach the end zone, but Dawson bailed them out with kicks of 52 and 53 yards, his first career game with two makes of more than 50.

The Seahawks (2-4) managed 137 yards of offense, and had the ball for only 17:04. Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, filling in for Jackson, completed 12 of 30 passes for 97 yards.

Jets 27, Chargers 21

At East Rutherford, N.J., Plaxico Burress caught three touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score that was set up by an interception by Darrelle Revis, and the Jets stormed back for the win.

Leading 21-17, the Chargers (4-2) appeared to be driving for a possible game-sealing score when Philip Rivers threw toward Vincent Jackson. The ball tipped off the receiver's hands and right to Revis, who returned the interception 64 yards to the Chargers 19.

After a few runs by Shonn Greene and a defensive holding call ? the Chargers' 11th penalty in the game ? Mark Sanchez found Burress on a slant for a 3-yard touchdown to give the Jets (4-3) their first lead midway through the fourth quarter. It was the second time in his career Burress caught three touchdowns, and first since 2007 while with the Giants.

Texans 41, Titans 7

At Nashville, Tenn., Arian Foster ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns and added 119 more receiving with a 78-yard TD as Houston moved back into first place in the AFC South.

The Texans (4-3) snapped a two-game skid even with Pro Bowl receiver Andre Johnson missing his third straight game and fullback James Casey his second due to injuries. Matt Schaub threw for 296 yards and two TDs.

Tennessee (3-3) has lost two straight. Chris Johnson had 18 yards on 10 carries and was booed by the hometown fans, many of whom began leaving early in the fourth quarter.

Falcons 23, Lions 16

At Detroit, Matt Ryan ran and threw for touchdowns to give Atlanta a double-digit lead in the first half, and the Falcons held on for the win.

On Detroit's final drive, a pass-interference penalty against Atlanta was overturned because instant replay showed defensive tackle Corey Peters had tipped the ball. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford appeared to injure his right ankle on the play.

He then throw incomplete on fourth down from the Atlanta 41 and limped off the field.

The Falcons (4-3) ran out the clock with a first down to win consecutive games for the first time this year. The Lions (5-2) have lost two straight after their perfect start.

Ryan's 17-yard pass to Roddy White put Atlanta ahead 17-6 at halftime.

Calvin Johnson caught his 10th TD pass late in the third quarter to pull Detroit within four points.

Obama welcomes post-Gaddafi era in Libya (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama welcomed the declaration of liberation by Libya's new leaders Sunday and urged the transition government to respect human rights and work toward democracy after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.

"After four decades of brutal dictatorship and eight months of deadly conflict, the Libyan people can now celebrate their freedom and the beginning of a new era of promise," Obama said in a written statement.

With the fighting over, Obama said Libya's Transitional National Council should turn its focus toward elections.

Obama has touted Gaddafi's death Thursday as the beginning of a new time for Libyans and as vindication of a cautious strategy in which the United States backed a NATO air campaign to help rebels but steered clear of a lead role.

Obama had been criticized by Republicans at home for what has been described as a "leading from behind" strategy.

Libya's new rulers, he said, should "continue living up to their commitments to respect human rights, begin a national reconciliation process, secure weapons and dangerous materials, and bring together armed groups under a unified civilian leadership."

The United States would cooperate with its international allies to "help advance a stable, democratic transition," Obama said.

McDonald's net income rises 9 pct (AP)

NEW YORK ? McDonald's Corp. on Friday said its third-quarter net income rose by 9 percent to $1.51 billion, its ninth straight quarter of earnings gains. The fast food giant's results, which beat Wall Street estimates, were boosted by a 14 percent increase in revenue that offset some higher expenses the chain is facing, including a higher effective tax rate and rising labor costs in Europe and other markets.

Investors rewarded the news, sending shares up more than 3 percent to $91.96.

McDonald's has performed well throughout the recession and its aftermath, partly because the chain has managed to reshape its image from a burger-and-fries joint into a hip, healthy place to eat. The world's largest burger chain, which other fast-food companies often copy, has introduced new menu items like smoothies and oatmeal, remodeled restaurants, and converted more locations to 24-hour operations.

Jim Skinner, McDonald's CEO, said in a statement that the third-quarter results are "a clear indication that our strategy is working."

McDonald's success also comes from efforts to focus on growing emerging markets as the U.S. economy struggles. In China, McDonald's increased its restaurant locations from about 1,200 to 1,400 over the year. And Europe now accounts for the biggest portion of McDonald's revenue, slightly more than 40 percent.

McDonald's revenue in the U.S. rose 5 percent, respectable compared to the performance of many rivals but slow compared to its own performance in other regions. Revenue in Europe climbed 16 percent, and revenue in Asia/Pacific, the Middle East and Africa climbed 20 percent. However, those gains also benefited from the impact of foreign currencies: When the dollar is weak, money made in other countries translates into more dollars in the U.S.

Overall revenue rose to $7.17 billion, beating the $7.02 billion expected by analysts polled by FactSet. Revenue at stores open at least 13 months rose 5 percent. That's a key measure of a company's health because it excludes the impact of recently opened or closed locations. Per-share earnings were $1.45, beating analysts' expectations of $1.43.

The revenue figures are a snapshot of money spent on food at both company-owned and franchised restaurants. They do not reflect McDonald's corporate revenue, which consists of revenue at company-owned stores plus fees and rents paid by franchisees.

Per-share earnings were $1.45, beating analysts' expectations of $1.43.

Analysts will be trying to figure out how long McDonald's momentum will last. Like many companies, McDonald's has raised prices on customers this year to deal with the higher costs for ingredients like beef and materials like fuel. But it has to be careful to not raise prices too much and risk driving away its budget-conscious customers.

Additionally, McDonald's some franchisees are upset over the costs they have to pay for remodeling. Many of the chain's expenses are on the rise as well.

McDonald's effective tax rate rose to 33.4 percent, up from 29.7 percent, because of some lower foreign tax credits. Higher labor costs in Europe and the region that covers Asia, the Middle East and Africa crimped profit margins at company-operated stores there. So did costs related to the new store openings in China.

McDonald's said it expects interest expenses to increase 8 to 10 percent for 2011. It expects food costs to increase 4.5 to 5 percent in the U.S. and Europe for the year. For the past two quarters it had predicted a slightly lower increase, 4 to 4.5 percent.

DeMarco: Classic World Series begins to unfold

Rangers' wild Game 2 victory could be sign of things to come

Image: Rangers, CardinalsReuters

The comeback in Game 2 by Elvis Andrus and the Texas Rangers could be a sign that this wild and unpredictable series is going to be a classic.

ST. LOUIS - There's no way of knowing whether the top of the ninth inning in Game 2 will be the turning point of the 2011 World Series.

If this thing doesn't return to Busch Stadium, and the Texas Rangers win their first-ever world championship on their own turf, then probably so.

But if the St. Louis Cardinals rebound from the disappointment of being on the verge of a 2-0 series lead, only to suffer a series-tying 2-1 loss, then the Rangers' two-run, top of the ninth will be just a drama-filled footnote.

And maybe still, a classic Series that nobody can predict is just beginning to unfold ? and the warning jokingly issued by Rangers manager Ron Washington will prove to be sage advice: "I've got to say to those of you with bad hearts, watch yourself.''

For now, we're left with all of this:

Top of the ninth: Previously nearly-unhittable closer Jason Motte on to protect a 1-0 lead against top of the order of a Rangers lineup that had been limited to three hits and frustrated by Jaime Garcia and two other relievers.

But Ian Kinsler got a blooper to fall in front of center fielder John Jay, who was playing deep in the 'no-doubles' outfield defense that seemed more like a 'too-many-singles' defense instead.

"They caught a break with a blooper,'' Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "But after that, they did some good classic baseball stuff to make two guys come around to score.''

Beginning with Kinsler swiping second base ? barely ? as Elvis Andrus squared around to bunt but pulled back on a top-of-the-strike zone fastball from Motte. You see, for all their power ? Josh Hamilton, last year's AL MVP, finished fifth on the team with 25 homers, for heaven's sake ? the Rangers use speed, aggressive base-running and run-manufacturing to kick-start their offense. That's the way Washington learned to play the game, and that's how he makes his team play.

Kinsler has a green light, and swiped the bag on Motte, whom Washington said, 'isn't very quick to the plate.' Kinsler wouldn't say exactly what ? 'I'm not going to tell you that' ? but did admit to finding something he could take advantage of in Motte's delivery.

Kinsler is a stolen-base machine, successfully swiping 136 of 158 career attempts (86 percent), and therefore has a green light to run. But Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina throws out 44 percent of base-stealers and arguably has the game's best throwing arm behind the plate. How much was Kinsler safe by this time?

"Enough,'' he said with a smile. "I mean, my hand barely got in there. It took everything I had. Yadier made an unbelievable throw ? quick, on the money ? and I was just able to get my hand in there.''

Washington admits that he was playing it more conservatively; he called for the sacrifice bunt from Andrus, who didn't execute.

"I wanted to get the runner over to second base and give the middle of the order a chance to at least get us a run, and stay in the ballgame,'' Washington said. "But it all worked out.''

But with Kinsler on second, Washington wanted Andrus to hit the ball to the right side, and his All-Star shortstop did ? a single right-center that couldn't score the ultra-aggressive Kinsler. But the throw from defensive replacement Skip Schumaker was mishandled by cutoff man Albert Pujols just long enough to Andrus to streak to second base.

Andrus already had made two run-saving plays in the fourth and fifth innings ? the latter a spectacular up-the-middle diving stop/glove flip to Kinsler for a force out at second. This time, it was legs that made the difference.

"I was already 3-4 steps around first,'' Andrus said. "I took my chance when the ball bounced away. If (Pujols) catches it, I come back to first. You have to be ready for anything. A lot of things were happening in a short period there.''

So instead of a sacrifice bunt that would have put Kinsler on second with one out, there was a stolen base, a single and a base advance on an error, setting up second and third with no outs. No wonder Washington later said, "you know, there was good karma in our dugout the whole night.''

And that brought up Hamilton, whose inclusion in the lineup was the subject of pre-game questioning due to an injured groin that has left him far below 100 percent. Washington denied that moving Hamilton from his usual spot in center to left field was a concession to Hamilton's injury, and said, "I know my player better than you guys.''

Hamilton faced a handful of questions afterward, saying in a friendly tone: "I'm tired of talking about it. I'm going to hurt until the season is over. It's a non-issue as far as talking about it. So stop asking me.''

And when asked specifically if he had taken a painkilling injection, his response was, "I plead the fifth.''

La Russa's decisions were pitch to Hamilton with first base open? Walk him to load the bases? And which pitcher to use ? Motte or left-handed specialist Arthur Rhodes?

"I don't think walking him there would have made it easier for us,'' La Russa said. "I think it would have made it harder. We had a chance to do something with Hamilton and Rhodes ? maybe they score a run, but don't advance the other guy. But (Hamilton) did a good job.''

Hamilton hit a first-pitch slider from Rhodes for a game-tying sacrifice fly to right field to score Kinsler, and Andrus also advanced to third. Hamilton said he thought La Russa would leave Motte in to face him.

"(Motte is) a guy who throws close to 100 (mph), rather than bring in Rhodesy, who throws 89. I don't get paid to make those decisions, and I'm glad he made that one.''

Then Michael Young's sacrifice fly to center off Lance Lynn brought in Andrus with the go-ahead run ? making up for Young not being able to make a play on Nick Punto's hard smash that would have ended the bottom of the seventh. Instead, that half inning was extended for pinch-hitter Allen Craig, who singled in the game's first run off reliever Alexi Ogando in a repeat matchup from Game 1.

"You've got to keep fighting, and we needed to get one here (in St. Louis),'' Washington said. "We're equal (with the Cardinals) in the way we play the game. It's certainly going to be a lot of fun the rest of the way.''

Frankfurt Airport opens new runway

Frankfurt Airport inaugurates its long-awaited fourth runway Friday after a ?760 million ($1.05 billion) construction project that involved building taxiways over a busy road, planting hundreds of acres of replacement trees and relocating wildlife including frogs and salamanders.

The first user of the landings-only strip is expected to be Chancellor Angela Merkel, whose government plane is scheduled to arrive before the ceremonies.

The airport says the new runway, parallel to two existing ones but about a mile (1.5 kilometers) away, will boost capacity by 50 percent, from 83 takeoffs and landings per hour to a potential 126, and from the current 53 million passengers a year to 88.6 million by 2020. The airport says it now has peak demand that it can't meet of up to 100 takeoffs and landings per hour.

It says the added capacity should mean better service and fewer delayed flights for passengers.

The recent discovery of a sunken British steam ship with 20 tons of silver might be a once-in-a-lifetime find. For recreational divers, though, there?s still plenty of treasure to hunt.

It will also help the airport improve its growth potential in the face of international competition. It has slipped from the biggest airport in continental Europe to No. 2 behind Paris' Charles de Gaulle.

The new runway is key because the two parallel main runways, which date from the era before jets, are too close together to be used simultaneously. A third runway is takeoffs-only, leaving a logjam with landings.

The 2,800-meter (3,065-yard) fourth runway is connected to the rest of the airport by taxiways that cross a busy highway, high-speed rail line and the airport ring road.

The expansion won approval from the government of the state of Hesse despite opposition from local residents. But the airport and its biggest airline, Lufthansa AG, suffered a setback earlier this month when a court in the state of Hesse where it is located banned night flights between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The ban mostly affects flights by Lufthansa Cargo.

The new runway was first proposed in 1997 but construction only began in 2009 after a years-long study and permitting process. Airport operator Fraport AG agreed to a number of environmental remedies, planting 288 hectares (711 acres) of forest to replace the 282 hectares cut down for the new runway and relocating wildlife.

The airport currently ranks 9th worldwide by passengers behind Atlanta, Beijing, Chicago O'Hare, London's Heathrow, Tokyo's Haneda, Los Angeles, Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Dallas-Fort Worth.

The airport's expansion will also eventually include a new, third terminal south of the airport at the site of a former U.S. military base. An 800-meter (half-mile) extension from Terminal 1 to open next summer will include a shopping mall past security and more gates that can handle A-380 superjumbo jets.

Police bar missing baby's parents from home

One of the most aggressive police searches yet of the home where a Kansas City infant went missing more than two weeks ago drew officers Wednesday armed with shovels, rakes and other tools who hauled off bags that appeared to be full of potential evidence.

Police refused to say what they found inside or outside the home belonging to Jeremy Irwin and Deborah Bradley, who say an intruder snatched their baby daughter, Lisa, from her crib in the middle of the night as the mother and two other boys slept.

From shortly after sunrise through late afternoon, FBI agents and police officers joined in the search that began after a judge issued a warrant that prevented the parents from returning to the house while it was under way.

Officers headed to the back of the home with shovels, rakes and a ladder and could be seen digging behind a shed in the yard. Out front, investigators left the house carrying brown paper bags and clear plastic bags and took them to vehicles parked outside.

Police also brought in a bomb and arson truck to assist the search, though spokesman Capt. Steve Young said there were no indications of explosives in the house. Some bomb detection devices use X-ray technology to scan solid objects to reveal items concealed within. An AP reporter saw investigators carrying at least a dozen thin, black rectangular sheets away from the home during the afternoon.

Lisa Irwin was 10 months old on Oct. 4 when her parents reported her missing. Her father, an electrician, said he returned home from a late shift to discover the lights on, a window tampered with, the front door unlocked and Lisa gone. Bradley and Lisa's two older brothers had been asleep elsewhere in the house. Bradley has admitted she drank heavily that night and may have blacked out.

Video: Mom of missing baby Lisa admits drinking (on this page)

The parents insist their baby was snatched by an intruder.

Police, FBI agents, officers from area law enforcement agencies and the Missouri National Guard already have searched the family's home, neighborhood, nearby wooded areas, a landfill and abandoned homes. Police have refused to discuss any evidence gathered in the searches, saying only that they remain without a suspect.

There was no indication the family has tried to block investigators' access to their home, which already has been scoured by FBI agents with dogs.

The parents' attorney, Joe Tacopina, said Wednesday that he welcomed the search, but "we want this to be done in good faith, not to match some predetermined conclusion."

Earlier Wednesday, Tacopina questioned the need for a warrant.

"They can go in and out any time," he said of police. "They have had unfettered access because we want answers."

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said Wednesday's search was not based on any sort of tip. Authorities restricted media access, Patton said, because agents were using a procedure involving dogs that they didn't want to be recorded. She declined to elaborate.

Young said all previous searches of the house have been conducted with the family's consent. Wednesday's warrant prevents anyone except those involved in the investigation from entering, meaning family members ? who have returned home from time to time to collect clothes and other belongings ? may not go back inside until the search is over. It wasn't immediately clear whether the search would resume Thursday.

Story: Attorney: Baby Lisa's mother will 'absolutely not' be arrested

The Federal Aviation Administration established a no-fly zone over the search area effective until 5 p.m., agency spokesman Tony Molinaro said. He characterized the zone as a safety precaution and said it had been requested by law enforcement. Similar restrictions were introduced during a search of the area Tuesday.

Questions about a fire
On Tuesday, investigators swarmed the woods located a few blocks away from the Irwin home for their fourth search of the area. The site is near a dumpster where firefighters told NBC News they had responded to a fire an hour and a half before Lisa's parents reported the baby missing.

Bradley said police showed burned clothing to her during interrogations, NBC reported.

Also on Tuesday, Young said Bradley and Jeremy Irwin had not sat down face-to-face with investigators since Oct. 8, and had only responded to questions seeking clarification on tips.

It's been 10 days since the couple have answered police questions on "things that we believe only they would know about," he said.

Much attention has focused on a rash of recent TV interviews the parents have given in which Bradley admitted she had consumed several glasses of wine the night that Lisa disappeared. She also told NBC that she did not see the baby after putting her to bed at about 6:40 p.m. ? roughly four hours earlier than the time she originally gave police. She didn't explain the difference.

Tacopina has said Bradley's candid words indicate the parents have nothing to hide.

Bradley has said she expects to be arrested in her baby's disappearance, but told NBC News she hoped she wouldn't.

"I had absolutely nothing to do with it," she said. "It's a waste of time, money, energy and focus and people should be looking for [Lisa]."
