Throughout your lifetime, you will go through good times with your friends, partners, and relatives ? and also some bad times. Those bad times can include facing breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed noncutaneous cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death after lung cancer among women in the United States (Nelson et. al, 2009).

What can you do if you find out someone close to you has cancer?

Treat them normally.
It?s a natural response as a friend to be so shocked that you purposefully start to see them less and less. You?re not sure how to act around them so you don?t see them. But that can be one of the biggest blows to somebody who?s suffering from cancer.

Once you?ve talked about it, the best thing you can do now is to treat them normally. Do everything you used to do. When it comes to a physical illness, people just want to live their lives as normal as possible. They don?t want to be treated like a cancer patient. That one fact does not define them. They?re still your friend, wife, sister, or daughter.

No disease can ever change that. Help them continue to live their life and let them no that you?re there for them if they want to talk more about it.

Bring laughter and positivity to the table.
The weight cancer and treatment place on an individual is huge. Help them take their mind off of things through laughter. Reminisce funny events, bring your friend?s favorite funny movie over, or just be downright silly to get them to laugh.

Additionally, cancer is beaten everyday, so help them beat it. Help them stay positive by reminding them of those who have survived cancer such as close friends or famous celebrities. You can also help reinforce this by verbally stating that they will make it.

Above all, just be there for them.
