Our 6th Child - Adoption.com Forums

I am a Mommy to five...Birdman (17), Shmoobi (16), Sport (11), Princess (3) & Jazzy (2). Shmoobi is our biological son, the other four our our adoptive/foster children. I run an in-home daycare caring for my two daughters, three 2 year old girls and two school age girls. Well Sport & Jazzy's biological mother delivered a healthy baby girl last Friday and the baby was placed into foster care into our home. I am trying to manage my daycare plus my toddler daughters with a newborn baby girl. Here are some questions for those with infants and toddlers?

* Do you go outside often? We were going out 2-4 hours a day? I am in Western NY so it can get cold here!
* Do you ask the toddlers not to touch the baby (germs)?
* Do you limit field trips and outings? We currently attend an outside pre-school T/Th and ballet Friday plus a field trip Wednesdays.
* Do you have any advice for a Mommy of six/ having three girls ages 3 and under?

My husband and I are so happy to have such a big family but are working on finding our new routine and making it work for us giving all our children attention, love and guidance!

gratefulness innovator: Self Improvement Month: Get Organized ...

Self Improvement WordleThis month is Self Improvement Month. All this month I will do a weekly post to help you improve yourself by getting organized.

Last week we took a home assessment for Self Improvement Month. This week we put that plan into action. This week it is time to get organized!

Look over your home assessment list and let?s get started.

  • You want to first gather your supplies. (Trash bags, boxes, sharpies, etc.)
  • You want to get started in one area first.
  • Sweep through the house organizing according to the plan you wrote out last week.
  • Immediately take out the trash and take the donations to where you have already designated them to go.
  • Start containerizing what you have decided to keep.
  • Put everything in their place. You should already have the designated spots preplanned from your outline last week.

That?s it! You now have completely organized your home. Give yourself a pat on the back and a cup of tea. Now this process can take you several weeks to complete. It?s not like the TV shows you see where everything is tip top in 48 hours. So don?t get discouraged at the length of time it may take to get everything in order. Just keep working your plan and you should have no problem having an organized home in no time.

Next week I will show you how to maintain what you have now put in order. Because maintenance is the key to success.

Until next week?

US Appeals court rules Motorola can't enforce injunction against Microsoft in Germany... again

US court rules Motorola can't enforce German injunction against Microsoft, keeps the Xbox 360s flowing

In another face of the ever turning world of patent battles, Reuters reports Microsoft has snagged a victory over Motorola as the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in its favor today. Motorola had obtained an injunction in Germany against Microsoft products -- including the Xbox 360 and Windows 7 -- based on its h.264 patents back in May, but today the court upheld a previous decision putting enforcement on hold because of Microsoft's existing lawsuit against Moto for breach of contract. Microsoft's push to leverage its patents into licensing payouts from manufacturers of Android devices have seen the two at each other's throats since at least 2010, when the folks from Redmond lodged an ITC complaint over nine patents and followed up with another suit accusing Motorola of charging unfair license fees for its patents. Motorola fired back with its own pair of lawsuits -- all of this a year before we heard it would be acquired by Google -- and the battle was on. Whether or not this moves us any closer to any resolution remains to be seen, but at least Bavarian gaming consoles are safe, for now.

Own Ward, Bay View Gallery Night 2012 ? Local Trolley

Cramming activities into the last clement days of the year isn?t too difficult in Milwaukee and no neighborhood rises to the occasion quite like Bay View. There?s the South Shore Farmers Market and The Frolics. There was Pabst Fest and Bay View Bash, Art Beat, that other crap I?m missing, and now Bay View Gallery Night, which kicks off tomorrow night. Yes, a Gallery Night so cool it happens a full month before the rest of the City?s.

On the serrated butter knife?s edge of this madness, Made in Milwaukee and Alchemist Theatre safely press their pointy little teeth into Milwaukee?s penchant for creative to-do?s du jour. Bay View?s abundance of venues and pop-up cultural dioramas basically will allow you to just walk down KK without a plan. But here are a few places and artists to see.

Alchemist Theatre and Bay View Lounge

They co-sponsor the night and will have photography of Shane Gardner on the walls and music of Todd Richards and the Surround Sound Experiment in the ether. What?s coolest about this stop? The Alchemist Theatre has a chic/cheeky dive concept lounge rarely open when no show is on-stage.

If you?re not sure about theatre, you can at least absorb one of the best social atmospheres Milwaukee has to offer without committing a couple hours to stage entertainment. If you like it enough, you can vamp back in for the Alchemist?s upcoming Hollowed Eve themed freak-you-out live theatrical production The Alchemist Eye.

Amanda Iglinski at the Hide House

Usually all sorts of craziness goes on at the Hide House like church services and improvised musical shows. Most of that will probably still be going on tomorrow night and among others Amanda Iglinski?s works will perch on the Hide House?s interior vertical planes as a part of the first floor display. She?s a tremendous pop artist with intriguing vision that melds social commentary to the craft of picking images, motifs and colors to blend.

The Hide House will also have exhibits and B-Boy performances from the TRUE Skool camp, Bay View Arts Guild, Sara Risley, music, art studio open houses and egg rolls from Mamma?s Eggrolls.

Gao Gallery

Resident artist Jenie Gao will open her space to feature artwork of her contemporaries Steph Davies, Laura Macias Barrera, Zina Mussman, Rachel Quirk and live music.

Gao Gallery occasionally offers instructional art workshops. Stop by during Bay View Gallery Night and you?ll be able to screenprint a ready made design on one of your own garments or a T that you can purchase there. Jenie Gao?s star as a fine art purveyor is in full bloom and something to gaze upon for seeing what it looks like to go beyond just having talent in a particular medium.

Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing

Ink?s abound in this town, why stop now? I see calf tats are in. Shogun Tattoo & Body Piercing will wet their needles publicly for the grand ole? first time, opening on BVGN?s expressive ocean swell. The Mil can?t get enough ink, how can you blame us, most of us live where our bodies are at the moment anyway.

The Rest Are The Best Anyway

If I were to drop a few more names for thirst quenching pit stops let?s jus throw Studio Lounge, Black Bird Bar, Boon and Crockett, Hector?s and Club Giribaldi out there arbitrarily. Bay View Gallery Night?s website has the full listing happenings complete with proper addresses and other vital information. I also hear that the new super brilliant Alterra will have a parking lot extavaganza of sorts to top it all with a mango.

Kids Gulp 7 Trillion Calories Per Year

60-Second Health

Obese kids have higher cardiovascular risks as adults, and sugary beverages are stoking that obesity epidemic. Katherine Harmon reports

More 60-Second Health

Kids from the ages of two to 19, consume about seven trillion calories in sugar-sweetened beverages per year, according to Steve Gortmaker of the Harvard School of Public Health. He spoke at the Obesity Society Annual Scientific Meeting in San Antonio on September 23rd.? Seven trillion is a lot of calories in sugar-sweetened beverages. At, for example, 50 cents per can, it's about $24 billion a year.

All of those dollars and sugary calories are stoking the childhood obesity epidemic. Currently, in the U.S., about 17 percent of children and adolescents are obese?that's more than 12.5 million kids. And new research in the British Medical Journal suggests that obese children will have much higher risk factors for cardiovascular disease as adults. [Claire Friedemann, et al, Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Healthy Children And Its Association With Body Mass Index: Systematic review and meta-analysis] Even as kids, their hearts are changing shape to look like those of adults at risk for heart disease.

But the good news is that simply cutting out an average of 64 calories a day from kids' diets could start to level out the steep rise in childhood obesity. That's equivalent to less than half a can of most non-diet sodas.

Treasure-trove of writings and images by the co-discoverer of natural selection; Project directed by researcher from the National University of Singapore

27 September 2012, Singapore The complete works of the great naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace will be made freely available online today on the Wallace Online website. This project was directed by historian Dr John van Wyhe from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Among the thousands of pages of writings, it includes the first announcement of the theory of evolution by natural selection. The Wallace Online project was made possible by an anonymous grant from an American donor.

Wallace and Darwin

Since the scientist's death 99 years ago, Wallace's complete publications have never been gathered together. The new website is unveiled in time for the centenary celebrations in 2013 that mark the anniversary of Wallace's death in 1913.

Back in the 1850s, Wallace independently formulated the theory of evolution by natural selection during a fit of tropical fever. He later sent an outline of the theory in one of the greatest ironies in history to Charles Darwin. To avoid a priority dispute, papers by both men were read together at a London scientific meeting in July 1858. The event unleashed the Darwinian revolution whose shockwaves continue to this day.

Wallace has long been in the shadow of his more famous contemporary Charles Darwin. The compilation of this new website is timely and long overdue. It provides 28,000 pages of searchable historical documents and 22,000 images. They can now be seen free of charge by anyone around the globe at Wallace Online ( href=http://wallace-online.org/).

Wallace's contributions to biodiversity

Wallace spent four years as a collector in Brazil (1848-1853) and eight years in Southeast Asia (1854-1862). In addition to collecting an astonishing 125,000 specimens of insects and birds, Wallace proposed a sharp dividing line between the Asian and Australian animals in the archipelago. This line still bears his name today and is called The Wallace Line.

Dr van Wyhe, said: "Wallace was one of the most influential scientists in history. But until now, it has been impossible to see all of his writings. For the first time, this collection allows anyone to search through his writings about Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, and see many of the birds and insects that he collected."

Dr van Wyhe holds a joint appointment as Senior Lecturer at NUS' Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of History, under Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, respectively. He is also the founder and director of the award-winning Darwin Online (http://darwin-online.org.uk/) at the University of Cambridge, UK.
