Reports new study in Biological Psychiatry

Philadelphia, PA, July 31, 2012 Mental disorders that emerge in childhood and adolescence, including attention-deficit disorder, depression, anxiety and substance abuse, constitute significant challenges to cognitive, emotional, and social development. As a result, it is perhaps not surprising that earnings and income are substantially reduced among people diagnosed with mental disorders.

Is the association between mental disorders and earnings a correlation, or is low income a consequence of a disorder? Are mental disorders universally associated with reduced economic/social class or does economic standing reflect a complex interplay of individual capacities and societal demands? Answers to these questions have been unclear until now.

A group of researchers used the World Health Organization World Mental Health Surveys to specifically examine the association between early-onset mental disorders and adult household income. These surveys collected information on income earnings, employment status, education, and demographics. In addition, interviews were conducted to diagnose 15 different mental disorders among participants.

Restricting the surveys to individuals aged 18 to 64 who were neither students nor retired, data was available from 37,741 respondents in 22 different countries. The countries were classified by their income level, with 11 high income, five upper-middle income, and six low/lower-middle income.

They found that early-onset mental disorders are associated with significantly reduced household income in high and upper-middle income countries but not low/lower-middle income countries. These associations were consistently stronger among women than men. These data make clear that the disability associated with mental disorders is more clearly evident in the most economically developed countries.

"These new data suggest that the increased demands of economically advanced societies 'unmask' functional deficits that are not evident when the same problems emerge in less developed societies," commented Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry. "These important data highlight the importance of understanding how adaptation breaks down in our society so that rehabilitative and pharmacologic strategies might be developed to help affected individuals adapt."

These results indicate that the capacity of disordered individuals to cope with the demands placed on citizens in economically advanced countries is compromised. This would suggest that policy makers should consider the societal effects of such reduced income when making health care and resource allocation decisions.

Dr. Norito Kawakami, Chair of the Department of Mental Health in the School of Public Health at the University of Tokyo, Japan, and the study's lead author, noted that "health policy makers often fail to appreciate the enormous human capital costs associated with untreated early-onset mental disorders."

"As a result," says Kawakami, "investments in early interventions for childhood-onset mental disorders are woefully inadequate."

Dr. Ronald Kessler, from Harvard Medical School and another of the study's authors, noted that "the amount of lost adult income associated with early-onset mental disorders is so great that the costs of implementing early interventions for these disorders would be more than paid back even if they led to only a small proportional decrease in this lost adult income."

Micro-copier for genome analysis

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? A new method holds promise to advance personalized medicine.

The scientists Jochen Hoffmann, Dr. Guenther Roth, and Prof. Dr. Roland Zengerle from the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg? can now copy 100,000 different DNA sequences simultaneously? in a so called picowell array the size of a one cent coin.

The picowell array is a chip with 100,000 wells on which the DNA sequences are dispersed in order to achieve a statistical distribution of one sequence per well. All wells are then covered with one microscopic slide and the DNA sequences are replicated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The resulting DNA copies bind to the miscroscopic slide at exactly the position of the original DNA sequence. The DNA copies can be decoded by next-generation sequencing systems in the wells of the array. The microscopic slides can be used, similar to DNA microarrays, for the rapid and cost-effective analysis of entire genomes -- without the need for other equipment or additional transfer steps.

Such genome analyses allow insights into the regulatory systems of an organism. For example the genome analysis of a tumour cell can reveal which of its signal paths are defective. This knowledge in the context of "personalised medicine" can help to develop a tailored therapy for a specific patient group.

The project was supported by the "Program for Excellency in Science and Technology" as part of a grant from the Hans L- Merkle-Stiftung. The Robert Bosch GmbH and the Association for the Promotion of Science and Humanities in Germany also supported the project.

The topic is now further developed in the Lab-on-a-Chip research groups "Arrays" of Jochen Hoffmann and "Assays" of Dr. Guenther Roth. Lab-on-a-chip is a main research topic in cooperation with the Laboratory for MEMS Applications and the Institut fuer Mikro- und Informationstechnik der Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft (HSG-IMIT). The research groups are based on the campus of the Faculty for Engineering.

Business Consulting Solutions: What Your Brand-new Firm needs to ...

Starting a fresh firm is each exciting and difficult. Determination, dedication, and effort will be your commitment for its initial few years. To attenuate the issues and then make it easier reaching them, you may try to ask the aid of a new business consulting company.

Access to knowledge and experience

You most likely believe that the means to access venture capital money, a top notch team or even state-of-the-art devices are all you need to get a brand new corporation through its formative years. Even though these are essential, money, the ability of your teams along with your machines may not be adequate whenever complications begin mounting.

Think about the person viewed as one of the best business frontrunners ever: Steve Jobs. This individual was generally known as remarkable and also a trailblazer when he established Apple. Nonetheless, Jobs had to lose his corporation and learn essential lessons inside the many years before his going back to Apple, where he turned it into one of the most significant firms on earth.

Experience and data are crucial when difficulties face a corporation, or perhaps together with the simple, daily things required to efficiently operate one. Inside the aggressive business conditions these days, you possibly will not have the time for you to learn. A business consulting company provides you with entry to that experience and knowledge.

Running an enterprise demands a minimum of an operating familiarity with quite a few specialities. You or even your close associates have no enough time to study them, or even the assets to get enough individuals to cover the gaps. A business consulting company can certainly accomplish these duties for your gain.

Usually, these businesses have experts that run his or her organizations and specialize in every field. When you have concerns, they more than likely possess the answer. When difficulties become a little more stressful, the variety of practical knowledge and expertise in a business consulting company often means the real difference between your company growing or otherwise not.

Getting the proper tools

An additional way to fulfill the many issues in operating and expanding a corporation should be to have the proper tools. Again, funding, people and equipment can only take you so far. If you do not have even some of the more basic administrative tools, all your venture capital, team members, and advanced equipment will mean nothing.

Getting a full suite of business consulting solutions could help. Financial specialists help you make paperwork like income statements accurately and quickly. Making the right business plan can be hard, so these packages give several templates you can readily use. Report generators help you make presentations that are both informative and professional looking.

Better still, these kinds of new small business consulting services are usually on the web so they are accessible at any time, anywhere, providing that there?s an Internet connection. This could be crucial when you need to recheck your business plan during inconvenient times. Obtaining the important documents and data of the enterprise easy to get at will go quite a distance to making sure you meet the obstacles of running one.

Police: Family In Gloucester County, New Jersey Targeted By Two ...

By Mike Dougherty, Robin Rieger

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, Nj. (CBS) ? A Gloucester Township, New Jersey family was apparently targeted by two men in a home invasion robbery on Saturday night.

According to police, the suspects gagged and bound a female victim when she walked into her Jefferson Drive home in Laurel Springs shortly after 9 p.m. and found them searching for cash or jewelry. Police say they didn?t leave empty handed when told there was nothing there.

?The suspects stole the wedding ring and engagement ring of the woman they had bound up and they fled from the residence,? says Deputy Police Chief David Harkins.

Harkins says the suspects knew who they were robbing.

?They gave indications that they did know that they were employees or connected to a jewelry store. So that leads us to believe that they were targeting these people specifically.?

Harkins says the woman?s husband came home a short time later to find her tied up. Fortunately, she wasn?t hurt.

The two suspects are described as black males wearing black ski masks and dark clothing. One of the males was between 5-10 and 5-11 and
spoke with a Jamaican accent, however the accent may have been a ruse.

Anyone with information on who might be responsible is asked to call police.

Geithner meeting German finance minister, Draghi

BERLIN (AP) ? U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is to meet his German counterpart and the head of the European Central Bank following a flurry of pledges to save the euro that have raised expectations of action by European policymakers.

U.S. and German officials say Geithner will meet German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble Monday on the North Sea island of Sylt, where Schaeuble is vacationing. Geithner will then travel to Frankfurt to meet ECB President Mario Draghi.

Markets surged after Draghi said last Thursday that the ECB would do "whatever it takes" to preserve the euro. Over the following days, the leaders of Germany, France and Italy also pledged to do all they can to protect the eurozone.

That raised expectations that the bank might buy Spanish and perhaps Italian government bonds.

NYC Vs. SF Tech: Above And Beyond The ?Company Town?

fayshoafIt didn?t start with a monkey, or a tiger. Or even a million-dollar blowout with Snoop performing in a hazy fog. For me, it started with schwag. Lots and lots of schwag. So much, in fact, that in 2006 a group of enterprising tech folks at RubyRed Labs started a side company named Valleyschwag, selling leftover tech schwag for $15. You read that correctly; people would willingly pay a $15 monthly subscription to get poorly-sized, Hanes Beefy T?s with now-defunct tech logos on them. And it was positioned as an opportunity; to quote Michael Arrington on this very site, ?sometimes it?s easy to forget that a lot of people out there don?t have the opportunity to get schwag from their favorite startups.? Times, how they have changed (though I still do cherish my Dodgeball shirt).

Oklahoma Doctors Use Online Network Similar To Facebook

Deanne Stein, News 9

OKLAHOMA CITY -- It's considered the largest and fastest growing online network for physicians. It's called Doximity, a sort of Facebook for doctors only. And several doctors in Oklahoma already "Like" it.

"There's Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn," said Dr. Vikas Jain, a sleep specialist at Integris. "But none of that is secure; anybody can access that and view it. So, when you're talking about patients and privileged information, you can't really post to those."

Through Doximity, however, doctors can. The online network includes 75,000 physicians across the country in its database, providing a secure platform for doctors to communicate.

"When you look at how we communicate pagers and fax machines, those are outdated technologies," said Dr. Jain. "This is a lot nicer because most physicians have smartphones or access to the Internet."

The application offers doctors a place to send secure emails and faxes, stay up to date on the latest medical news through articles and journals as well as use iRounds, a place to securely post questions and advice on challenging cases. Sometimes that advice can come in real time.

"It can be instant," Dr. Jain said. "As soon as I post, it's up there and whenever another physician is on there and they see it, it can be just a matter of minutes."

Which Dr. Jain said can help bridge the communication gap between doctors.

"When you look at the leading causes of death in America, medical errors are maybe in the top five, and one of the most common causes of medical error are miscommunications between physicians," he said.

But through Doximity, Dr. Jain says he's hopeful that will change.

"I've saved a lot of time in being able to find physicians and gain access to information," he said. "That all translates into better patient care because I feel like I'm well informed about what's going on."

Through Doximity, doctors also can?go online with mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphones.

Pests, which include insects like bees and wasps, and rodents like rats and mice, can be really hazardous both to human health and to structures and buildings. Especially when aggravated and provoked, such pests can inflict painful bites and stings, causing different reactions like pain and allergies, with some even becoming life threatening. Sadly, a research done by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in UK revealed a tenfold increase in the number of councils that are no longer providing pest control services. The good news, however, is that you have the option to get rid of pests on your own, or have an Islington pest control professional do the job for you. In Islington, many companies are already available, offering different pest control services for different types of pests. The process often starts from home inspection -- which includes identification of sources of infestations, the amount of infestation and how much the infestation has damaged the structure. If you have chosen to hire an N1 pest control expert, the service provider would offer suggestions for pest extermination while considering the concerns you may have about the processes. Also, while an expert may have specific strategies and methods for certain situations, they may tailor their actions to ensure that they do not just apply the best treatment but also employ pest control techniques that you are comfortable with. The process also includes the use of either chemical or non-chemical type of extermination. The fastest way of eliminating pests and the most commonly used by experts is chemical extermination, or the use of insecticide sprays or powder. Experts generally use chemicals and compounds that are specifically designed to kill pests, and at the same time prevent damage to structures. Meanwhile, especially if you are doing the process on your own, you may also choose to use non-chemical pest control methods, such as habitat modification, elimination of possible hiding spots for pests, and application of pest-baiting or trapping systems. For a small infestation, or an infestation that has just started to grow, eradicating pests on your own may be wiser. There are several products that are easily accessible in the market. Some of the basic tools, which may already be kept at your house, include a mini flashlight, screwdriver, dusting equipment, baits gun and spray rigs, as well as safety equipment including chemical gloves and goggles. Meanwhile, if the infestation has gotten serious and has grown into something that is difficult to handle, asking help from an expert may be your best option. Islington pest control companies offer diverse services, including emergency services like removing hives and nests, as well as killing pests that have started to plague your home; pretreatment of newly constructed homes and buildings which include sealing corners that can be potential avenues of entry for pests; and infestation inspections and sanitation services. Some companies also offer follow-up services.

Offering different types of pest control and treatment for different types of pests, we are one of the most reliable Islington pest control companies you can rely on. Visit our website for more information about the effective N1 pest controlservices we offer.

All week long we've been focusing on the Olympics, beginning with an overview of London's new Olympic Park, which is headlined by the Zaha Hadid-designed Aquatics Centre, and Anish Kapoor's controversial ArcelorMittal Orbit observation tower. For a deeper look at the venues that will be on display at the Olympics over the next two weeks, check out our roundup of the top six green buildings at the Olympics. In addition to the sports stadiums, Olympics visitors will also be treated to the sights and sounds of Coca-Cola's multi-sensory Beatbox Pavilion, an interactive sound and light display that responds to touch. But the art installation that we're most excited about is the one by artist David Cerny, who retrofitted a 6-ton London double-decker bus with a gigantic pair of human arms. Best of all, the arms are motorized, enabling the bus to do push-ups.

Philippine gunmakers take aim from the backyard to the production line

MANDAUE CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - In the Philippines, they vote with their trigger fingers. Elections mean big business for illegal gunsmiths, who are looking forward to 2013 mid-term polls.

With election-related violence commonplace, the Philippines imposes a ban on the carrying of guns for six months, from campaigning to the proclamation of winners.

With legal access denied, Filipinos simply turn to the many illegal gunsmiths who ply their trade in back alleys and on the edge of rice fields despite government crackdowns.

In Danao City, in the northeast of central Cebu island, they are already anticipating a windfall.

"There's actually huge demand for guns, especially now and because of the elections next year," said a 33-year-old gunsmith, who asked to be named only as Remo, as he hammered away at bits of scrap metal in a makeshift factory in Danao.

Loud music drowned out the noise of Remo's workshop on the edge of a dry creek, hidden from view by thick bamboo groves, as he and two assistants hammered, filed and drilled away.

"We are actually having some difficulty in keeping up with the orders because it usually takes at least two weeks to make one .45 caliber pistol, even if I work 16 hours a day," he said.

"THE WORLD OF OUR FATHERS"

As the pro- and anti-gun lobbies in the United States agonize over how to respond to yet another massacre of innocents, in the Philippines many want even more liberal gun laws to boost production of a small but growing legal industry.

Guns have long been part of everyday life in the Philippines, especially since the end of World War Two.

After the war, farmers took up arms during agrarian unrest in the late 1940s and early 1950s and then a Maoist insurgency that has become one of the world's longest-running conflicts.

Today, all private security guards in the Philippines carry either handguns or shotguns, or both. Guns are a common sight in shopping malls, government and private offices, banks, restaurants and even schools.

"When we were children, we were already surrounded by guns. It was the world of our fathers," said Elmer Genzon, a third-generation gunsmith who once made "paltik", or illegal weapons, out of scrap metal and bits of angle iron.

"We grew up making guns."

According to www.gunpolicy.org, a site hosted by the University of Sydney's School of Public Health in Australia, there are about 3.9 million guns -- legal and illegal -- held by civilians in the Philippines, or about 4.7 per 100 people.

That puts the Philippines 105th place on a list of 179 countries, tiny in comparison to the 88.8 per 100 in the United States and behind even Australia with 15 per 100.

While it is impossible to count the number of illegal guns in the Philippines, the national police estimate there are about 350,000, again paltry in comparative terms to Central and South American weapons hotspots like Guatemala, Honduras and Colombia.

Yet the Philippines suffers worryingly high gun-crime rates.

According to the latest available figures from the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, there were 8.9 homicides per 100,000 people in 2003, by far the worst in Asia and outstripping Europe. (www.unodc.org/unodc/en/data-and-analysis/homicide.html)

While not at the levels of Central and South America, the number was still almost triple that of the United States, which had 3.3 homicides per 100,000 people the same year.

Illegal guns are not just carried by criminal gangs, Maoist rebels and Muslim separatists. They also belong to civilians and politicians who keep private armies.

Investigations into the Ampatuan family, a political clan linked to the 2009 massacre of 57 people, including dozens of journalists, found more than 1,000 high-powered weapons, including mortars and .50 caliber machineguns.

HEALTH PLAN

In the 2004 elections, authorities decided to crack down on illegal gunsmiths in Cebu. There had been more desultory attempts to act against an industry dating back to the early 1900s.

Police closed the Genzon family's home factory on the edge of a rice field during the 2004 crackdown.

Like other gunsmiths from his hometown, he was soon working at the government-registered Shooters' Arms Manufacturing factory about 25 km (15 miles) down the road in Mandaue City.

"We no longer have to worry about police raids and we also have a steady source of income, plus some health and other social benefits," Genzon, 33, told Reuters while he wrapped a handcrafted model of a 1911 Colt .45 destined for a dealer in Rochester, New York.

A small army of 400 workers assembles revolvers and pistols at the Mandaue factory, which exports guns to the United States, Australia, Italy and Thailand.

Factory owner Romulo de Leon III, a second-generation gun dealer, quickly recognized the unusual skills developed by the illegal, backyard gunsmiths when he decided to switch from selling imported weapons to making his own.

His partly automated factory now produces about 20,000 guns a year, with up to 85 percent of them sold abroad, making him the second largest gun manufacturer in the Philippines.

With cheap labor and Filipino ingenuity, de Leon wants to expand into new markets in Eastern Europe and South America.

With more foreign markets in their gunsights, legal manufacturers hope President Benigno Aquino, a gun enthusiast who shoots competitively, will help liberalize gun laws.

"What we want is a more balanced gun legislation, not too restrictive, but we also understand that guns must be regulated," said Demetrio Tuason, head of the largest and oldest manufacturer in the Philippines, Armscor, at a Manila gun show.

Existing laws allow Filipinos to own one "long" firearm -- a rifle or shotgun -- and one handgun. Guns are meant to be licensed and owners must have permits to carry them in public.

Tuason wants gun licenses more like driving licenses, allowing people to "own as many guns as they can afford".

Not surprisingly, gun sellers also want to expand the industry, worth about 2.5 billion pesos ($59.37 million). Export receipts grew fourfold to $23.4 million between 2000-11.

But, just like in the United States, there seems little appetite to change existing laws. "That's not a priority right now," Aquino told Reuters in an interview earlier this month.

There are 34 gun-related bills before both houses of parliament, some seeking looser laws and others more control.

Supporters of two prominent bills seeking to outlaw civilians carrying guns in public and stiffer penalties for possession of illegal weapons have all but given up hope.

Much like the United States, guns are so deeply ingrained in Philippines culture that they don't expect the July 20 shooting in a Colorado cinema, in which 12 people were killed and 58 wounded, will have much of an impact.

"For the last 22 years we've been telling our lawmakers ... to pass a strict gun control law but nothing has happened," said Nandy Pacheco of the Gunless Society group.

"Our gun laws are encouraging a culture of guns, a culture of violence. When do we act? Are we waiting for a similar attack to happen here in our movie houses?"

Russian court orders BP to pay $3.1 billion

(AP) ? An arbitration court in Siberia ruled Friday that British oil giant BP should pay $3.1 billion in compensation to its Russian joint venture TNK-BP over a failed attempt to form an alliance with Russian state-controlled oil company Rosneft.

BP's spokesman in Russia, Vladimir Buyanov told The Associated Press that it considers the ruling by the Tyumen Region Arbitration Court unfair and will appeal it.

The verdict came in response to a lawsuit launched last year by Andrei Prokhorov, a minority shareholder of TNK-BP.

The multibillion-dollar Arctic deal between BP and Rosneft collapsed last year after Russian TNK-BP shareholders contested it. They claimed that BP was breaking TNK-BP's shareholder agreement by entering into a deal without the venture's knowledge or consent.

Buyanov argued that TNK-BP couldn't suffer any damage because Rosneft never saw it as a potential partner. "Rosneft has always said that TNK-BP isn't being viewed as a potential part of the deal," he said.

"We consider this ruling unfair," Buyanov said. "We expect a court of appeals to make a well-founded and fair verdict."

After its prospective deal with BP fell through, Rosneft teamed up with U.S. oil giant ExxonMobil to explore for and produce oil in the Arctic and the Black Sea.

Earlier this month, Rosneft signaled its interest in acquiring BP's share in TNK-BP. In their turn, TNK-BP's Russian shareholders also have confirmed their eagerness to buy the British firm out.

TNK-BP, Russia's third-largest oil producer, is owned on a 50-50 basis by BP and AAR, a consortium of Russian billionaire shareholders. A 50 percent stake in TNK-BP could be worth about $18 billion, according to the company's market valuation.

Celebrity Real Estate: Wahlberg, Seau homes hit market

By Zillow staff

This week in celebrity real estate, Mark Wahlberg's home is back on the market and the home of late NFL linebacker Junior Seau has been listed for sale.

Mark Wahlberg lists 90210 property again

Zilow

Mark Wahlberg's home includes an enormous pool with a waterfall.

?

He's great at starring in action films and Hollywood blockbusters, found success as an underwear model and was even a decent singer back in the day. But Mark Wahlberg has not done quite as well when it comes to selling his home in the Beverly Glen neighborhood.

Wahlberg first listed his enormous estate in 2008 for $15.9 million. In 2009, with news of his wife, model Rhea Durham, expecting baby No. 4, the property was delisted. In 2011, the home hit the MLS again, this time with a discounted price of $13.995 million.

Unfortunately, that discount wasn't enough, and Wahlberg slashed the price again ? this time down a million to $12.995 million.

Wahlberg's Mediterranean-style manse at?9694 Oak Pass Rd., Beverly Hills, Calif., 90210, is an ultra-private compound in a secure and gated community near Beverly Park. A "trophy property with unparalleled privacy," Wahlberg's 5-bed, 8.5-bath home sits on nearly 2 acres. A guest house on the property provides an additional two bedrooms and baths.

Measuring 11,500 square feet, the prime slice of celebrity real estate offers a chef's kitchen, screening room, as well as dining and living rooms "fit for entertaining."

Wondering how Wahlberg gets in shape for his movie roles? The property also has a two-story gym with a full-size boxing ring. The grounds feature a sports court (suited for basketball, tennis or racquetball), putting green, outdoor pool with waterfall, grotto and cabanas, and sweeping canyon views.

The master bath features a steam shower and soaking tub.

Like many actors' homes, Wahlberg's house features a movie theater.

Junior Seau's Former Home for Sale

Zillow

The day of Junior Seau's death, the property was surrounded by mourning fans.

Football fans were shocked and saddened in May when retired NFL linebacker Junior Seau was found dead in his Oceanside, Calif.,?home. It was later determined that the former San Diego Charger, Miami?Dolphin and New England Patriot had committed suicide at age 43.

Less than three months after his death, Seau's home is now listed for $2.295 million in the San Diego real estate market.

Seau purchased the home at 604 S The Strand, Oceanside, Calif., 92054 for $3.2 million in 2005. The 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath sits on a lot overlooking the ocean, which can be enjoyed from a massive outdoor balcony and the spacious great room.

Inside, the 2,238-square-foot home has hardwood floors throughout, a fireplace and antique stove in the kitchen.

The home is listed by John Beran??of ERA Ranch & Sea Realty.

Zillow

The home sits only feet from the ocean.

Zillow

The three-bedroom home has an open floorplan.

Gene fusion is behind deadly brain cancer

Treatment for a lethal form of brain cancer could be on the horizon after the discovery that the cancer can be formed by two genes fusing together. People with the disease could potentially benefit from drugs that block the activity of a protein produced by this wayward fusion.

Cancers can be sparked by a number of genetic mutations, including disruptions to single parts of a gene that either over-stimulate or castrate an important protein. But some cancers arise when two entire genes are accidently fused together during natural cell replication. The protein that the fused genes code for performs some of the functions you would expect of it but does so in new locations or contexts. "They do their thing, but incorrectly," says Anna Lasorella at the Institute for Cancer Genetics at Columbia University, New York.

Lasorella and her colleagues studied the genes involved in a lethal form of brain cancer called glioblastoma. About 3 per cent of the glioblastoma tumours they looked at were caused by the fusing of two genes.

On its own, each gene has an important but benign function. When fused together the two wreak havoc during cell division. The protein that the fused genes code for latches onto the spindles that pull freshly replicated chromosomes into two new cells during cell division. The interference means that instead of an even division, the cells end up with different numbers of chromosomes: a phenomenon known as aneuploidy. "It's a well-known hallmark of cancer," says Antonio Iavarone, also at Columbia.

Having identified this mechanism, the team wanted to check that the fused genes actually cause this form of cancer. So they injected the newly formed protein into the brains of healthy mice. Ninety per cent of the mice went on to develop the expected glioblastomas.

The team then administered a drug that blocked the activity of the new protein. In doing so, they were able to double the mice's survival time.

Because the protein is specific to the cancer cells, the team predicts that drugs to target it would cause minimal damage to healthy cells.

The New Economy Is A Social One | Baked Social Media

The New Economy Is A Social One?New Economy? sounds trite, and maybe it is, but whether you like it or not, the economy is changing.

People are buying online more than ever before, and the growth for online shopping is huge.

So, while brick-and-mortar stores are struggling, thousands of small and home businesses are doing amazingly well online, via their websites or social networks.

Old World retailers like David Jones and Myer are struggling because they failed to grasp the internet early on and are now bleeding faster than they can change course.

Meanwhile Mumpreneurs and ?kitchen table? businesses are thriving online.

Technology is the driver of this new business model. The internet and the associated technologies, like networking websites, apps and mobile phones, have opened up opportunities like never before.

You can now create a business for as little as $10 and turn it into an empire or just make a living easier than any other time in history.

Even traditional brick-and-mortar stores can, and have, taken advantage of this new era in e-commerce by creating online stores, networks and brands that reach out to those who love and come to love their stuff.

If businesses are to survive this fundamental shift, they will need to move online, at least partially, or face oblivion.

The sheer power of opening up new markets all over the world should be enough to move store owners on to the web, but still many are reluctant for whatever reasons, and are even more reluctant to embrace online?s version of word-of-mouth: social media.

Maybe it?s because there are too many voices screaming at them, or too many past dot-com busts have scared them off, but where they see something to fear, I see potential.

You don?t have to grow your business to become the next Apple (unless you really want to), but you can grow your business so it becomes successful and profitable.

Are you ready to grow your business?

Russell Allert is an online communications and social media manager with an Australian credit union and founder of Baked Social Media. Baked Social Media provides business owners with a resource to grow their business using social media.

Majority Of Americans Would Vote For An Atheist For President (POLL)

(RNS) For the second time in less than a year, the Gallup poll reports that a majority of Americans would vote for an atheist for president.

The latest survey, from June, found that 54 percent of those asked said they would vote a "well- qualified" atheist into the Oval Office -- the highest percentage since Gallup began asking the question in 1958, when only 18 percent said they would back a nonbeliever.

On the other hand, the survey showed that those who do not believe in God still come in behind every other group polled for, including gays and lesbians (68 percent) and Muslims (58 percent).

Still, an imaginary atheist candidate passed the 50 percent threshold for the first time when Gallup asked the question in August 2011, so the trend is upward.

"We have seen an enormous change over time in the willingness to vote for an atheist," said Karlyn Bowman, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, which reports the numbers in its current newsletter.

"But I think the numbers also remind us that this is a deeply religious country. That doesn't mean we are all going to church on Sunday, but that having religion in your life is valuable to most Americans and I think that explains the resistance."

Indeed, in the current poll, 43 percent said they would not vote for a well-qualified atheist, a percentage that was higher among Republicans than Democrats (58 percent) or independents (56 percent).

And there is more discouraging news for nonbelievers. In his analysis of the recent data, Gallup's managing editor Jeffrey M. Jones writes that for groups whose approval ratings hover within a narrow range of percentage points for more than 10 years -- which might be happening for atheists -- it can take more than fronting an appealing atheist candidate to reach more universal numbers, like those enjoyed by women (95 percent), blacks (96 percent) and Catholics (94 percent).

"It may be that there is an inherent bias that isn't going to change" for some groups, like atheists, whose numbers have leveled off, Jones said. "It is, in many cases, a long process and some of these groups have a way to go."

Herb Silverman, president of the Secular Coalition for America, knows that first-hand. In 1990, he ran for governor of South Carolina where an old law banned atheists like him from holding public office. Silverman lost -- by a landslide -- though his candidacy did lead to the repeal of the law by the state's supreme court.

Silverman, who tells the story of his run for office in his book "Candidate Without a Prayer," says that to push their approval numbers higher, more atheists need to "come out," just as gays and lesbians have done.

"I think prejudices will always be with us, so I am not optimistic enough to think (atheists' approval rating) will be near unanimous," he said. "But I think the more role models we have the better things will be."

Tom Flynn, editor of Free Inquiry magazine, an atheist publication, agrees.

"When you think you don't know any atheists then they seem horrible, but when the person at the desk across from you is an atheist then those stereotypes don't hold," Flynn said.

But he's a glass-is-half-empty guy, too.

"We have to keep in mind that we atheists are still the group that the smallest number would vote for," he said. "We are riding that train into the sunlight of equality, but we are still sitting in the caboose."

All in all, I?d say journey Louis Vuitton 2012 and/or wedding insurance coverage can be a relatively very good expense I would detest to determine somebody I love have their wedding marred or ruined by regrettable circumstances And I?d loathe it even more if I was footing the monthly bill for any marriage ceremony that went awry and had to be re-scheduled In current times we have observed amazing disasters just like the 9/11 terrorist attacks, hurricane Katrina as well as the enormous tsunami All of these horrific activities took spot in places where one may well desire to hold a location wedding ceremony, which must be considered a stark reminder of why it is so vital to go over your bases and obtain traveler?s and marriage ceremony insurance coverage.

A couple of Louis Vuitton Handbags companies that provide marriage ceremony insurance coverage are Fireman?s Fund, WedSafe Wedding ceremony Insurance Program offered through Affinity Insurance Services Inc., and Traveler?s Insurance coverage.
