Since the dawn of online gaming, millions of gamers have found new ways to connect with their friends. Online gaming has made it possible to ?hang out? with your friends, without being in the same room, building, or even country. On top of this advancement, a new wave of casual games have attracted new and different audiences to videogames. To continue building the user base of Kinect, Microsoft can and should take advantage of these trends by seeing that classic and instantly recognizable experiences make their way to the Xbox platform, with Kinect functionality. Many modern families enjoy playing videogames together, but there are those that have long time traditions of playing other things, like board games ? one such classic board game is Pictionary.
No matter how fun Pictionary is, not all families can stay at home all the time to enjoy each others company to play it. Be it college, vacation, or a job away from home, the fact is, the modern family probably isn?t able to be ?together? all the time. That means they can?t enjoy classic boardgames like Monopoly, Scrabble and of course, Pictionary. The solution is simple: play it on the Kinect! Not only can it simply be played on the Xbox 360, but also over Xbox Live where we can use beacons to set up play dates that work for everyone and help bring families ?together?.
The Premise:
Gameplay? Picture this; Everyone who has Kinect gets a box that centers on them. Once it?s your turn the box lights up and enlarges to take up the guesser?s screen. This happens while there is a timer on the side and the lone artist?s box is centered while other players line the bottom. Meanwhile for the artist, the word is on the side of the screen that isn?t taken up by a timer. Each team is assigned a color and the background will reflect this so artists and guessers know when it?s their turn.
Single Player ? Players can hone their guessing skills with this mode. They can watch the small clues slowly drawn and when they figure it out they can call out the answer to the Kinect. We know that voice commands are becoming a bit taboo, but it makes perfect sense here. The single-player mode will also aid players in knowing what to draw during multiplayer games by watching the AI draw certain clues. Some might call it cheating, others might call it doing your homework and blasting the competition.
Quick Draw ? In this mode players will be given an outline of an image to trace to the best of their abilities. It will include the many different items that can be drawn during normal games. This would also help players prepare and be able to quickly draw during timed sessions. Remember, practice makes perfect!
Kinect Integration:
- The artist must raise either hand ? whichever they choose to use as a paintbrush, and use it to sketch clues. They may also throw up both hands in order to erase an entire picture and start over.
- Guessers meanwhile will have their Kinects tuned in to listen for the word to solve. The left side of the screen will host the category of the word to keep them on the right track.
Why it would succeed:
The Kinect already has an amazing camera and voice recognition system. Using a well-known board game and allowing families and friends to congregate and play it from thousands of miles away just brings board game night back. There?s no need to reinvent the wheel. Pictionary is a game that can be enjoyed by any and all audiences and there?s no reason why it can?t be enjoyed on the Xbox 360 with a new twist thanks to the miracle of Kinect.
